Arabian Travel Market New Frontiers Recovery Award 2015 recognises Himalayan nation as its tourism industry suffers second life-changing economic and humanitarian blow in as many years
Arabian Travel Market (ATM), the region’s leading travel industry showcase, has named Nepal as the recipient of the New Frontiers Recovery Award 2015 at a special presentation that was also broadcast on ARN radio, on the final day of the annual event.
Accepting the award from Nadege Noblet-Segers, Exhibition Manager, Arabian Travel Market, on behalf of the Nepal Tourism Board, Rishav Agarwal, Co-Owner of Kathmandu-based Nebuti Travels, said that the industry response over the last three days at ATM had been “incredible”, with visitors to the stand asking for detailed situation updates and also pledging continued support.
“We are determined to get things back on track as soon as possible, once all the debris has been cleared and areas made safe. Despite the devastating loss of life, only around 30% of temples were destroyed, and the majority of hotels in Kathmandu are operational, and neither Pokhara nor Chitwan were affected,” he said.
“Our message this week is thank you to ATM and our industry partners and friends for their magnificent support. We will rebuild and we are confident about the future of the tourism sector in Nepal.”
Nepal’s confidence in the future of its tourism industry remains undimmed with four of the original six confirmed participating companies making it to Dubai for ATM 2015.
Nepal was shortlisted along with Japan and India, each of which suffered significant human and economic losses in the last 12 months due to devastating natural catastrophes, namely the Mount Ontake eruption in Japan and Malin landslide in India.
“Although the original decision was made to recognise Nepal following last year’s Sunkoshi River landslide, which resulted in both loss of life and loss of tourism revenues, this has obviously been surpassed by the catastrophic events of last month,” said Noblet.
“While it is too early at this stage to talk about the mid to long-term prospects for industry recovery, we know that every effort is already being made to restore a sense of normality to local communities as well as evaluate the way forward for the country’s tourism product and the fortitude and positive attitude of the Nepalese people will reap results,” she added.
Now in its 11th year, the New Frontiers Recovery Award was created in 2005 to recognise outstanding contributions to tourism development in the face of overwhelming adversity, supporting the chosen destination by donating exhibition space at the event to the value of US$10,000.
Previous award recipients include Phuket, Thailand; Cancun, Mexico; Sichuan, China; Baluchistan, Pakistan; Central Visayas, Philippines; and Northern India.

نيبال تفوز بجائزة "نيو فرونتيرز" لمعرض سوق السفر العربي 2015
فازت نيبال بجائزة "نيو فرونتيرز" لعام 2015 التي يمنحها سنويا معرض سوق السفر العربي، الحدث الأبرز في المنطقة لقطاع السفر والسياحة، منذ عام 2005 لتكريم الوجهات السياحية التي تتميز بنجاحها في تطوير قطاعها السياحي على الرغم من الصعوبات والتحديات التي تواجهها.
وتسلم الجائزة، نيابة عن مجلس سياحة نيبال، ريشاف أغاروال، الشريك في وكالة "نيبوتي ترافلز" للسفريات، من ناديج نوبلت - سيغر، مديرة معرض سوق السفر العربي، خلال حفل خاص أقيم بالمناسبة ضمن فعاليات اليوم الأخير للمعرض الذي يختتم أعماله اليوم (الخميس 7 مايو) في مركز دبي الدولي للمؤتمرات والمعارض.
وبهذه المناسبة عبر أغاروال عن سعادته بتسلم الجائزة وبالإقبال اللافت على الجناح النيبالي في المعرض من قبل الزوار الذين عبروا عن دعمهم المتواصل واستفسروا عن آخر الأوضاع الخاصة بقطاع السفر والسياحة في البلاد وقال: ""عقدنا العزم على إعادة الأمور إلى ما كانت عليه بأسرع وقت ممكن بما في ذلك العمل على ازالة الحطام واعاد الأمن والسلامة للأماكن المتضررة. وعلى الرغم من الخسارة الفادحة في الأرواح، فقد بلغ حجم الدمار للمعابد 30 في المائة فقط وأن غالبية الفنادق في كاتماندو تعمل بصورة طبيعية".
وأضاف: "نود بهذه المناسبة أن نقدم الشكر والتقدير لمعرض سوق السفر والسياحة وشركائنا في قطاع السفر والسياحة وإلى أصدقائنا على دعمهم الكبير لنا في مثل هذه الظروف الصعبة. ونحن عازمون على إعادة البناء وعلى ثقة كبيرة بمستقبل السياحة في نيبال".
وتم ترشيح نيبال لنيل جائزة نيو فرونتيرز لهذا العام ضمن قائمة مختصرة إلى جانب اليابان والهند وجميعها عانت من خسائر بشرية واقتصادية كبيرة خلال الأشهر الإثنى عشر الماضية بسبب الكوارث الطبيعية المدمرة بما فيها ثورة جبل اونتيك في اليابان والإنهيارات الأرضية في قرية مالين في الهند.
وقالت نوبلت: "على الرغم من أن هناك قرار سابق بمنح الجائزة إلى نيبال في أعقاب الإنهيارات الأرضية التي حدثت العام الماضي في نهر سانكوشي والتي تسببت في خسائر كبيرة للأرواح وعائدات السياحة، إلا أنه من غير المنطقي أن نتجاوز الأحداث الكارثية التي حصلت الشهر الماضي".
وأضافت: "أعتقد أنه من السابق لأوانه أن نتحدث في هذه المرحلة عن خطط متوسطة وطويلة الأجل لإعادة تأهيل قطاع السياحة ونحن على يقين بأن هناك جهودا مضنية تبذل من قبل المعنيين من أجل استعادة الشعور بعودة الحياة الطبيعية في المجتمعات المحلية إضافة إلى العمل على تقييم الأوضاع الخاصة بالسياحة والمنتجات والخدمات المرتبطة بها في البلاد وتعزيز المواقف الإيجابية للشعب النيبالي خلال هذه المرحلة".
وتمنح الدولة الفائزة بجائزة نيو فرونتيرز كأسا تذكارية مصنوعة من الكريستال اضافة إلى فرصة استثنائية تتمثل في تخصيص مساحة عرض بقيمة 10 آلاف دولار امريكي في المعرض لتسويق نفسها والترويج لمنتجاتها ومعالمها السياحية. وتضم قائمة الدول التي فازت بالجائزة في السنوات السابقة كل من تايلند والمكسيك والصين وباكستان والفلبين والهند.
