The first charitable, effective system in Egypt for collecting, sorting, and distributing medicine to low-income families, managed to assist 400 beneficiers in 2014 on monthly basis
Cairo, Egypt, March 31st 2015 –Boehringer Ingelheim and Ashoka Arab World’s Making More Health initiative celebrated today Waleed Shawky, founder of “Medicine For All” and the second “Making More Health” Fellow in the Arab region for the great achievements during the past years. Waleed Shawky, through the initiative “Medicine for All”, partnered with 30 NGO’s across Egypt and succeeded to significantly increase medicine donations during the past 8 years. The increased partnership with NGO’s leveraged the initiative to as many as 400 beneficiaries in Egypt, on a monthly basis throughout 2014 and to date.
The collaboration between Boehringer Ingelheim and Ashoka Arab World’s Making More Health initiative provided Waleed and his social community campaign “Medicine for All” with greater access, reach, and spread to individuals in all of Egypt, especially places that don’t have enough healthcare centers like El Fayoum and Beni Seuf. Waleed’s primary goal for launching the initiative was to create a system that fills the gap between the great need to access medicine and the huge amount of waste produced by various actors. Being awarded as “Making More Health” Fellow, Waleed was able to get support to sustain his initiative and served more patients requiring medicine all around Egypt specifically in rural areas and Upper Egypt.
The Egyptian annual medicine wastes are estimated to be 1 billion Egyptian Pounds. Due to the trending consuming behavior, consumers usually buy more than their needs of medicine, ending up not using it before the expiration date. In addition, at most cases consumers do not have to use all medicine as per the doctors’ prescriptions. Not to mention that most of medications in Egypt are over the counter, without the need of any prescription. Witnessing this problem first hand as a pharmacist, Waleed Shawky, Making More Health Fellow, built a community-based system to collect, sort and distribute medicine to low-income families in Egypt using medicine wasted by affluent households, pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies.
By bringing their respective skills together, Boehringer Ingelheim aims to promote new ways of “Making More Health,” which is why Waleed Shawky was chosen as a fellow. Waleed’s initiative will heavily impact the Egyptian community. With the support and encouragement from ‘MMH’ many burdened and less fortunate Egyptians will get the help they need. Waleed’s initiative reflected BI’s objectives by solving an urgent problem in Egypt and it is also a sustainable project that engages the community to help one another. Boehringer Ingelheim and Ashoka are supporting Waleed’s to spread his initiative and find solutions to the challenges he is facing such as proper storage area and creating database of the beneficiers Waleed is also trying to also create educational hubs that only require a set-cost of a computer and database upon launch. This is where he receives the support and access being an Ashoka fellow.
To build up his work, Waleed is aiming on two tracks: establishing university pharmacies and working on supporting the health insurance policies to help ease the process of obtaining medication. He is doing the latter by building coalitions with hospitalsand companies. He has established quality-control hubs in Egypt’s two main universities, Cairo University and Ain Shams University, which receive the largest number of pharmaceutical students from throughout the country. To achieve professional-level quality control, the collected excess drugs are screened, and filtered by student volunteers from the Faculty of Pharmacy whom Waleed trains during their clinical university years.
Waleed relies on a steady flow of specialized volunteers and a self-sufficient, zero waste strategy with no exchange of money or dependence on charity or external support. However, he established purposeful partnerships with NGOs who have direct access and connections to needy communities in their areas, who can benefit from this service. In addition to NGOs, Waleed targets all relevant stakeholders which include the sources of waste (households, pharmaceutical companies, and pharmacies) as well as pharmacy students, and needy households. Waleed has plans of spreading to all of Egypt with hopes of reaching the biggest number of people in need.

According to Waleed Shawky, Founder of ‘Medicine for All’ Initiative and Social Entrepreneur, “Today we celebrate the years of hard work since we started this initiative, we have managed to increase the number of beneficiaries from 20 to 400 on monthly basis and the number of volunteers reached 200. Not only that, the number of convoys reached 8 on monthly basis aiming at reaching targeted beneficiaries at rural areas. With the support of MMH initiative, we are looking forward for more expansion and direct increase our efforts with the chronic disease patients.”
Supporting the initiative, Dr Iman Bibars, Regional Director of Ashoka Arab World and Vice President of Ashoka Global, said, “At a time of increased economic pressures and lack of access to medicine, Waleed’s future plans will cover a portion of this great need in society and re-channel wasted medicine in 10 new educational pharmacies, which he plans to establish in pharmacy universities across the country (he is currently working in five). Waleed will continue to provide screened and filtered medicine to the needy in coordination with civil society organizations that have access to communities in need.”
Boehringer Ingelheim also supports Making More Health by engaging its 47,000 employees worldwide in various capacities to help spread an understanding and appreciation of social entrepreneurship and health innovation within their own communities.

نجاح أول نظام فعال وخيري في مصر لجمع وتصنيف وتوزيع الأدوية على الأسر محدودة الدخل ومساعدة 400 مستفيد فى عام 2014 شهرياً.
القاهرة – مصر – 31 مارس 2015 – عقدت "بوهرنجر إنجلهايم" بالتعاون مع مؤسسة "أشوكا الوطن العربى" لقاء للإحتفال بإنجازات الدكتور/ وليد شوقي مؤسس منظمة "الدواء للجميع" الخيرية خلال الأعوام الماضية وهو الزميل الثانى لمبادرة "نحو صحة أفضل" بالوطن العربى. وجاء إختيار الدكتور/ وليد شوقى من خلال مبادرة "الدواء للجميع" لما حققه من نجاحات بالشراكة مع 30 منظمة من المنظمات غير الحكومية فى جميع أنحاء مصر، وهو ما إنعكس بالفائدة حيث شهدت التبرعات بالأدوية المستعملة خلال السنوات الثمانية الماضية إرتفاعا كبيراً، مما ساعدة على توسيع دائرة المستفيدين من مشروعه ليصل عدد المستفيدين الذين يحصلون على علاج شهرى إلى 400 مستفيد فى مصر في العام 2014 وحتى الآن.
وساهم إختيار الدكتور وليد ومنظمته الخيرية "الدواء للجميع" من قبل بوهرنجر إنجلهايم ومؤسسة أشوكا الوطن العربى ليصبح أحد زملاء مبادرة "نحو صحة أفضل" على خدمة المجتمع فى الوصول والإنتشار بين عدد أكبر من الأفراد فى مصر، ولاسيما فى المحافظات التى تعانى من نقص فى مراكز الرعاية الصحية مثل الفيوم، وبنى سويف. وكان الهدف الرئيسى للدكتور/ وليد من القيام بهذه الحملة هو وضع نظام يسد الثغرة بين الحاجة الماسة للحصول على الدواء وإهدار كميات هائلة من الأدوية في مجتمعنا، وتم منح الدكتور/ وليد زمالة مبادرة "نحو صحة أفضل" بالوطن العربى مما ساعده فى الحصول على دعم يضمن لمبادرته الإستدامة، وتوسيع نطاق خدماته لتصل إلى عدد أكبر من المرضى الذين يحتاجون للدواء فى جميع أنحاء مصر ولاسيما فى الريف والصعيد والمناطق النائية.
هذا وتقدر قيمة الدواء المهدر فى مصر سنويا بحوالى مليار جنيهاً مصرياً، إذ يقوم المستهلك عادةً بشراء كمية من الدواء زائدة عن حاجته مما يؤدى فى النهاية لعدم إستخدامها قبل تاريخ إنتهاء صلاحيتها، بالإضافة إلى ذلك – فى كثير من الحالات لا يستهلك المريض كل الدواء الذى يصفه له الطبيب، ناهيك عن أن كثير من الأدوية فى مصر يتم تناولها دون إرشاد طبيب.
ومن منطلق عمله كصيدلى وكزميل لمبادرة "نحو صحة أفضل" أدرك الدكتور/ وليد أبعاد المشكلة فقام بوضع نظام يعتمد على الجهود المجتمعية فى جمع الفائض فى الأدوية وفرزها وتوزيعها على الأسر محدودة الدخل فى مصر، وذلك بالإستفادة بالفائض من الأدوية لدى الأسر القادرة، والصيدليات، وشركات الأدوية.
وإستهدفت بوهرنجر إنجلهايم من خلال تنسيق كافة الجهود – الترويج بطرق جديدة لمبادرة "نحو صحة أفضل"، وهو السبب وراء منح الدكتور/ وليد زمالة هذه المبادرة، وسيكون لحملة الدكتور/ وليد أثر كبير على المجتمع المصرى، إذ سيتمكن عدد كبير من المصريين الأكثر إحتياجاً والأقل حظاً – بدعم وتشجيع مبادرة "نحو صحة أفضل" – من الحصول على المساعدات التى يحتاجون إليها، وقد عكست مبادرة الدكتور/ وليد أهداف بوهرنجر إنجلهايم من خلال إيجاد حل لأحد المشكلات الملحة فى مصر، كما أنها مشروع مستدام يساعد على مشاركة أفراد المجتمع فى مساندة بعضهم البعض، وتقدم كل من بوهرنجر إنجلهايم ومؤسسة أشوكا الدعم لمبادرة الدكتور/ وليد لإنتشارها وإيجاد حلول للتحديات التى يواجهها مثل توفير أماكن ملائمة لتخزين الأدوية، وإنشاء قاعدة بيانات للمستفيدين من منظمة "الدواء للجميع"، كما يسعى الدكتور/ وليد إلى خلق محاور تعليمية لا تتطلب سوى توافر أجهزة محدودة التكاليف وإنشاء قاعدة بيانات، ومن هنا يحصل على دعم أشوكا الوطن العربى بوصفه زميل لها.
وحتى يتمكن الدكتور/ وليد من زيادة نطاق عمله سيركز جهوده لتدور حول محورين أساسيين؛ أولهما إنشاء صيدليات داخل الجامعات، وثانيهما دعم سياسات التأمين الصحى بهدف تسهيل إجراءات الحصول على الأدوية، وهو ما يعتزم تحقيقه من خلال إقامة شراكات مع المستشفيات والشركات ذات الصلة. وأنشأ الدكتور/ وليد بالفعل مراكز متخصصة فى مجال مراقبة الجودة فى جامعتى مصر الرئيسيتين، جامعة القاهرة وعين شمس، واللتان تستقبلان أكبر عدد من طلاب كلية الصيدلة من جميع أنحاء الجمهورية. وتحرص هذه المراكز على ضمان المهنية فى مراقبة الجودة حيث تتبع نظامًا تخضع بموجبه الأدوية الفائضة عن الحاجة للفحص والفرز من قبل الطلاب المتطوعين من كلية الصيدلة والذين يشرف الدكتور/ وليد شخصيًا على تدريبهم أثناء سنوات دراستهم بالجامعة.
ويعتمد الدكتور/ وليد فى عمله على تدفق ثابت من المتطوعين المتخصصين وعلى إستراتيجية قائمة بذاتها تتمحور حول مفهوم "صفر نفايات" (أى القضاء على النفايات كليًا) ولا تُدفع أى أموال فى مقابل تطبيقها ولا تعتمد على الأعمال الخيرية أو الدعم الخارجى. ومع ذلك فإنه أسس شراكات هادفة مع المنظمات غير الحكومية التى تتمتع بإتصال مباشر مع المجتمعات المحتاجة فى المناطق التى تتواجد بها والتى يمكن أن تستفيد من الخدمات المقدمة بموجب المبادرة المذكورة، كما أنه يسعى إلى التعاون مع جميع الأطراف الأخرى ذات الصلة والتى تتضمن مصادر المخلفات (الأسر وشركات الأدوية والصيدليات)، وطلاب كليات الصيدلة، والأسر المحتاجة. ويعتزم الدكتور/ وليد العمل على نشر مبادرته فى جميع أنحاء الجمهورية أملاً فى وصولها إلى أكبر عدد من الأشخاص المحتاجين.
وخلال اللقاء الإعلامي صرح الدكتور/ محمد السحار مدير مكتب بوهرنجر إنجلهايم مصر: "نحن فخورون بوجود الدكتور وليد شوقى على قائمة الزملاء الفاعلين فى مبادرة 'نحو صحة أفضل'، ونؤمن بأن منظمة 'الدواء للجميع' تمتلك أفضل الحلول الواعدة لأحد المشكلات الصحية التى تواجهها مصر فى الوقت الحالى، وتعد مشكلة المخلفات الطبية من المشكلات المؤثرة فى بلد كبير مثل مصر تعانى نسبة كبيرة من أفراده من إنخفاض الدخل وعدم القدرة على تحمل تكاليف الأدوية باهظة الثمن". واضاف الدكتور/ محمد:" نحن سعداء بشراكتنا مع مؤسسة أشوكا الوطن العربي وذلك للدعم الذي تقدمه لتعزيز جهودنا في المنطقة. وإيمانا وإلتزاما منا كشركة عالمية تعمل على تقديم الرعاية الصحية، قدمت شركة بوهرنجر إنجلهايم دعمها الكامل لمنظمة 'الدواء للجميع' تعزيزاً لمصداقيتها كأحد الجهات الفاعلة لتقديم الخدمات الصحية فى مصر".
وفى نفس السياق قال الدكتور/ وليد شوقى، مؤسس منظمة الدواء للجميع: "يعد إجتماعنا اليوم تتويجًا لسنوات من العمل الجاد بدأت بإطلاق المبادرة التى تمكنا من خلالها من زيادة عدد المستفيدين منها من 20 إلى 400 فردًا شهريًا وزيادة عدد المتطوعين فيها ليصل إلى 200 متطوع. ولم تقتصر ثمار المبادرة على ذلك فقط، بل إننا تمكنا من زيادة عدد القوافل التى تتجه إلى المناطق الريفية لخدمة الفئات المستهدفة بها ليصل إلى 8 قوافل شهريًا. ونحن نأمل أن يمكننا الدعم الذى نتلقاه من مبادرة 'نحو صحة أفضل' من توسيع نطاق عملنا وزيادة جهودنا لمساعدة المرضى الذين يعانون من الأمراض المزمنة".
وينضم إلى الأصوات الداعمة للمبادرة صوت الدكتورة/ إيمان بيبرس نائب رئيس مؤسسة أشوكا العالمية حيث قالت: "فى وقت تكثر فيه الضغوطات الإقتصادية وتقل فيه فرص المواطنين فى الحصول على الدواء، تأتى الخطط التى يعتزم وليد تنفيذها لتسد جزءًا من الإحتياجات المجتمعية من خلال إعادة توجيه مسار مخلفات الأدوية، لتتم الإستفادة منها فى 10 صيدليات تعليمية جديدة ينوى وليد إنشاءها فى صيدليات الجامعات بجميع أنحاء الجمهورية (وقد أتم إنشاء خمس منها بالفعل ويعمل بها فى الوقت الحالى). وسيستمر الدكتور/ وليد فى تزويد الفئات المحتاجة بالأدوية التى خضعت للفحص والفرز بالتنسيق مع منظمات المجتمع المدنى التى لديها إتصال مباشر بالمجتمعات المحتاجة".
وفضلاً عن ذلك تدعم شركة بوهرنجر إنجلهايم مبادرة 'نحو صحة أفضل' من خلال إشراك 47000 من موظفيها حول العالم من ذوى المناصب المتعددة فى جهود نشر الوعى حول المشاريع الإجتماعية ومساعى الإبتكار فى مجال الرعاية الصحية داخل مجتمعاتهم.
