Study Adds Obesity and Food Loss as Indicators in 109 Countries
[Dubai, UAE, September 14, 2014] – Food
security represents a growing global challenge, as the world’s population
increases by more than 75 million people each year, reaching more than 9
billion by 2050. Food prices will pose major obstacles to accessibility to
food, as billions in the developing world already spend half to three-quarters
of their income on food. Increasing shortages of water and arable land,
especially in developing nations, will present additional challenges to food
security.
DuPont and the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)
recently released the 2014
Global Food Security Index. The
Index measures 109 countries -- Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) added
this year, against 28 food security indicators that monitor the ongoing impact
of agriculture investments, collaborations and policies around the world.
While UAE is challenged with obesity
and food loss, the 2014 Index examines how these two new factors affect access
to safe, nutritious and affordable food. Seventeen
percent of the global population is overweight and at least 2.8 million adults
die each year as a result of being overweight or obese. “[1]According
to the World Bank, four GCC countries are
in the global top 20 for obesity: Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and United Arab
Emirates. DuPont

The other new indicator, food
loss, examines post-harvest and pre-consumer food loss that occurs in various
stages of production, processing, transport and storage along the supply chain,
such as when edible food products are left in the field or in silos, degraded
through improper packaging or consumed by pests. “DuPont is providing effective solutions to eliminate waste through
protection and ensuring a more sustainable food supply –one that is safer, more
secure, and less vulnerable to foodborne
pathogens and spoilage organisms. Considerable efforts have gone into
improving production technologies, distribution, hygiene

[الإمارات، 14 سبتمبر 2014] – أصدرت "دوبونت" (DuPont) ووحدة "إكونوميك
إنتيليجنس" (Economic Intelligence Unit) مؤخراً مؤشر الأمن الغذائي العالمي 2014 (2014 Global
Food Security Index). ويقوم
المؤشر بقياس واقع الأمن الغذائي من حيث 28 مؤشر للأمن الغذائي ترصد التأثير
المستمر للاستثمارات واتفاقيات التعاون والسياسات الزراعية حول العالم وذلك في 109
دولة، بما في ذلك دولة الإمارات والكويت اللتان أضيفتا إلى قائمة المؤشر هذا
العام.
ويشكل الأمن الغذائي تحدياً عالمياً متنامياً في ظل
الزيادة السكانية التي تتجاوز 75 مليون نسمة كل عام، حيث سيصل إجمالي سكان العالم
إلى أكثر من 9 مليار نسمة بحلول العام 2050. كما ستكون أسعار الأغذية بمثابة عقبات
رئيسية أمام إمكانية الحصول على الغذاء وذلك مع إنفاق المليارات من السكان في
الدول النامية نصف إلى ثلاثة أرباع دخولهم على الغذاء. وإضافة إلى ذلك سيشكل نقص
المياه ومحدودية الأراضي الصالحة للزراعة، لا سيما في الدول النامية، تحديات إضافية
أمام تحقيق الأمن الغذائي.
وفي حين تواجه دولة الإمارات تحديات تتعلق بالسمنة ونقص
المواد الغذائية، يدرس المؤشر كيفية تأثير هذين العاملين الجديدين على إمكانية
الحصول على الغذاء الآمن والمفيد وبأسعار معقولة. ويعاني 17% من سكان العالم من
زيادة الوزن، حيث تقضي زيادة الوزن أو السمنة على حياة 2.8 مليون بالغ كل عام.
وقال فليمنغ كرابنهوفت، مدير المبيعات الإقليمي لمنطقة مجلس التعاون الخليجي في
شركة "دوبونت دانيسكو": "وفقاً للبنك الدولي فإن أربع دول من مجلس
التعاون الخليجي تأتي ضمن قائمة أعلى 20 دولة تعاني من ارتفاع معدلات السمنة وهي
البحرين والكويت والسعودية ودولة الإمارات. وتتعاون "دوبونت للتغذية
والصحة" مع العملاء لإيجاد طرق جديدة لمواجهة تحديات الغذاء والتغذية وابتكار
حلول مستدامة لحياة أفضل وأكثر أماناً وصحة، حيث تتيح حلولنا خفض معدلات الدهون
والسكر في الجسم دون التأثير على الخصائص الحسية للأطعمة. كما يساعد الـ
"بروبيوتك" الذي نقوم بتصنيعه في تحسين عملية الهضم وتعزيز قدرة جهاز
المناعة".
أما المؤشر الجديد الثاني وهو نقص المواد الغذائية فيدرس
واقع نقص الأغذية بعد حصاد المحاصيل وقبل الاستهلاك والذي يحدث في مختلف مراحل
الإنتاج والتصنيع والنقل والتخزين على طول سلسلة التوريد، كالحالات التي تترك فيها
المنتجات الغذائية الصالحة للأكل في الحقول أو الصوامع، وتلك التي تتدهور حالتها
جراء عمليات التغليف غير الملائمة أو التي تقضي عليها الآفات. وأضاف كرابنهوفت:
"تقوم "دوبونت" بتوفير حلول فعالة للحد من الهدر من خلال حماية
وضمان إمدادات أكثر استدامة للغذاء وأقل عرضة للأمراض المنقولة عن طريق الأغذية
والكائنات العضوية المسببة للتلف. وقد بُذلت جهود كبيرة لتحسين تقنيات الإنتاج
والتوزيع ومعايير النظافة وتثقيف المستهلكين، إلا أن تفشي الأمراض المنقولة عن
طريق الأغذية لا تزال في تصاعد، حيث تؤثر على الظروف الصحية العالمية والمحلية
وتهدد مواردنا الغذائية المحدودة أصلاً".
