The American Corner of Abu Dhabi City, a resource center for US history, culture, policy and business located at ALHOSN University, recently held an awareness campaign dubbed “A World Without Alzheimer’s” in recognition of World Alzheimer’s Month.
The event commenced with opening remarks by Dr. Adnan Husnéin, the newly appointed American Corner Director, who introduced the Vice Chancellor & CEO of ALHOSN University, H.E. Prof. Munther Momany. In his welcome address, Prof. Momany emphasized the American Corner’s active involvement in promoting and organizing cultural and social events such as Breast Cancer Awareness Week, Earth Day, representing the USA in the Small World charity event, and Abu Dhabi’s first Volunteer Fair. He also highlighted the importance of the American Corner to the partnership between the US Embassy and ALHOSN University. The US Embassy’s Information Resource Center Director, Ms. Rula Khalafawi, was the honorary guest at the event.
The audience viewed a short documentary which revealed facts and figures on Alzheimer's disease in the USA. This was followed by an expert panel discussion which included Dr. Khalid Al Bagdady, Specialist in Neurology at the Gulf Diagnostic Center Hospital, and Dr. Radia Khan, Consultant for Internal Medicine at Burjeel Hospital along with her associates Ms. Srividhiya Iyer, Head of the Department of Physical Therapy, and Mr. Hamzeh Ayyad, Exercise Specialist. The panelists offered a window into a world generally misunderstood through an engaging discussion about the causes and treatment of this incurable disease which is the most common form of dementia. The panelists stressed the need to raise community awareness in order to improve quality of life for patients as well as their caregivers.
Speaking from personal experience, Dr. Husnéin said: “It is important for families in Abu Dhabi and across the region to understand the nature of Alzheimer’s and to be able to cope with their loved ones afflicted with the disease. Many elderly people suffer from improper treatment and psychological trauma due to the lack of understanding of this progressive ailment. We must learn to treat our loved one as an individual with a disease and not as a diseased individual. We hope the American Corner’s awareness campaign would help spread the word for a good cause.”
The day’s event concluded with a parade led by members of the Harley-Davidson Rider Community represented by ALHOSN alumna Ms. Shaima Al Hosani and Mr. Jasim Al Raseesi, followed by a reception and a fun round of memory games.
The American Corner was officially inaugurated at ALHOSN University in January 2011 to promote mutual understanding and an exchange of ideas between the United States and the United Arab Emirates by providing access to current and reliable information about the US by way of books and DVD collections, internet databases, and local programs open to the general public. The American Corner of Abu Dhabi City is one of 490 American Corners world-wide, one of three in the United Arab Emirates, and the first American Corner in the city of Abu Dhabi.
ALHOSN University, the local partner of the American Corner of Abu Dhabi City, delivers high-quality, value-based education under the motto of ‘global knowledge with local vision.’ It currently offers 18 undergraduate and 11 postgraduate degrees under the Faculties of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Business, and Arts and Social Sciences. ALHOSN accepts students of all nationalities and also accommodates youths with special needs. All its programs are accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
ركن الدراسات الأمريكية في مدينة أبوظبي ينظم حملة توعية بمرض الزهايمر في جامعة الحصن

نظم ركن الدراسات الأمريكية في أبوظبي، مؤخراً حملة توعية تحت عنوان "عالم بلا الزهايمر"، وذلك في إطار المشاركة في شهر الزهايمر العالمي.
قدم للحملة الدكتور عدنان حسنين، مدير الركن الأمريكي المعين حديثاً، وفي حضور سعادة الأستاذ الدكتور منذر مومني رئيس جامعة الحصن. وفي إطار كلمته شدد الأستاذ الدكتور مومني على المشاركة الفاعلة للركن الأمريكي في الترويج للفعاليات الثقافية والاجتماعية مثل أسبوع التوعية بسرطان الثدي ويوم الأرض وتمثيل الولايات المتحدة في فعالية عالم صغير، والمشاركة في معرض التطوع الأول في أبوظبي. كما سلط الأستاذ الدكتور مومني الضوء على دور مركز الدراسات الأمريكية في تعزيز التعاون بين السفارة الأمريكية وجامعة الحصن. حضر الفاعلية عدد كبير من الطلبة وأعضاء هيئة التدريس والأستاذة رولا خلفاوي، مدير مركز مصادر المعلومات في السفارة الأمريكية، ضيفة شرف هذه الفعالية.
واطلع الجمهور على فيلم وثائقي قصير كشف عن حقائق وأرقام حول مرض الزهايمر في الولايات المتحدة. وأعقب ذلك جلسة نقاش للخبراء ضمت كل من الدكتور خالد البغدادي، اختصاصي طب الأعصاب في مستشفى مركز الخليج للتشخيص؛ والدكتورة راضية خان، استشارية الطب الباطني في مستشفى برجيل، و سريفيديا آيير، رئيسة قسم العلاج الطبيعي؛ وحمزة عياد، أخصائي التمرين. وقدم المتحدثون نبذة عن عالم -في العادة- ما يساء فهمه من خلال نقاش تفاعلي حول أسباب هذا المرض غير القابل للشفاء وعلاجه، والذي يعد الشكل الأكثر شيوعاً لمرض القصور الذهني. كما أكد المشاركون بالجلسة على الحاجة إلى رفع مستوى الوعي المجتمعي في هذا الإطار من أجل تحسين نوعية حياة المرضى وكذلك القائمين على رعايتهم.
وقد عرض الدكتور حسنين تجربة شخصية جاء فيها: "من المهم للعائلات في أبوظبي والمنطقة أن تدرك طبيعة مرض الزهايمر وامتلاك القدرة على تقديم المساعدة لأحبائهم المصابين بهذا المرض. حيث يعاني العديد من كبار السن من المعاملة غير اللائقة والصدمات النفسية نتيجة نقص الوعي بهذا المرض ذي الطبيعة المتدرجة. وينبغي علينا معرفة كيفية معاملة المصاب كفرد معه مرض وليس كفرد مريض. ونأمل أن تساعد حملة التوعية التي نقوم بها في أن تؤدي دورها في توعية الناس بهذا المرض".
واختتمت الحملة التي استمرت ليوم واحد باستعراض قام به أعضاء فريق سائقي "هارلي ديفيدسون" ممثلاً بخريجة جامعة الحصن الآنسة شيماء الحوسني وجاسم الرصيصي، أعقب ذلك حفل استقبال وجولة ممتعة من ألعاب الذاكرة.
وقد افتتح ركن الدراسات الأمريكية في جامعة الحصن رسمياً في شهر يناير/كانون الثاني من العام 2011 بهدف تعزيز التفاهم المشترك وتبادل الأفكار بين الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية ودولة الإمارات عبر تسهيل الوصول إلى المعلومات الموثوقة والحديثة حول الولايات المتحدة عن طريق الكتب وأشرطة "دي. في. دي" (DVD) وقواعد بيانات الإنترنت والبرامج المحلية المفتوحة أمام الجمهور. ويعد ركن الدراسات الأمريكية في أبوظبي واحداً من 490 ركن للدراسات الأمريكية حول العالم، وهو الثالث من نوعه على مستوى دولة الإمارات والأول من نوعه في مدينة أبوظبي.
وتقوم جامعة الحصن، التي تعد الشريك المحلي لركن الدراسات الأمريكية، بتوفير التعليم النوعي والمتميز تحت شعار "معرفة شاملة برؤية محلية". وتوفر الجامعة حالياً 18 برنامجاً خاصاً بدرجة البكالوريوس و11 برنامجاً خاصاً بالدراسات العليا ضمن كلية الهندسة والعلوم التطبيقية وكلية الأعمال وكلية الآداب والعلوم الاجتماعية. وتستقبل الجامعة الطلبة من مختلف الجنسيات، بالإضافة إلى الطلبة من ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة. وتم اعتماد كافة البرامج الدراسية في "جامعة الحصن" من قبل وزارة التعليم العالي والبحث العلمي في دولة الإمارات.
