dubizzle releases research report that shows Egyptians selling unwanted items could boost the economy of Egypt by up to EGP 522 billion

dubizzle Egypt GM, Ahmed Eraqi, and dubizzle co-founder, JC Butler,  presented a compelling case for the population of Egypt to increase trade within the economy through selling an estimated two billion unwanted, unloved or unused items – supported by a study conducted by global market research firm YouGov.

Cairo, Egypt – March 23, 2013: dubizzle – the region’s leading online classifieds and community portal – has a vision to disrupt consumer exploitation, and this latest effort goes some way to proving their commitment to the cause in Egypt. The study, which focuses on Internet users across the country from a wide demographic, estimates that 2.2 billion items are currently owned by the Internet population of Egypt, and could be sold from consumer to consumer to create an injection of cash into the economy.
“When Egyptians trade items they no longer need or use, the overall supply in the market increases. This leads to lower prices, increasing the quantity of trade and keeping money in the Egyptian economy. In addition, as Egyptians sell their unused goods, they have more money to buy what they want. This increase in demand, expands market price and quantity, as well as creating even more Egyptian trade,” explained JC Butler, cofounder of dubizzle.
Through crossing survey figures directly with data collected from dubizzle about the average price of hundreds of thousands of items, it was possible to estimate the worth of these unwanted items at EGP 522 billion.
“This realignment of consumer goods can make a real impact,” continued Butler.
In Cairo alone, an estimated 7.2 million mobile phones worth EGP 6.2 billion could be turned into cash for the consumer, or 3.5 million TVs and home entertainment systems worth EGP 2.6 billion. And it’s not just technology items that are lying dormant – the report delves into clothing and accessories, baby items, toys, recreational items and home and garden goods, alongside consumer electronics.
“We carried out this research because we wanted to show fellow Egyptians that almost anyone with an internet connection can make extra cash through selling something they own and no longer want. That item can be anything, because online classified platforms allow you to connect with so many more people that you may never have met with in the past – meaning the likelihood of finding a buyer is very high,” commented dubizzle PR manager Pilar Rashad.
A summary of the research is publicly available in an info-graphic hosted ategypt.dubizzle.com/en/press, and can be useful to the consumer in realizing what is available in the market, which items best hold their value, which items are in high demand, and how best to make an additional income.
General Manager Ahmed Eraqi – who recently joined dubizzle from OTVentures where he oversaw the operations of otlob.com – met with ICT Minister Atef Helmy recently, where he and Butler presented the potential benefits of online classifieds to the Egyptian market.
“The deciding factor to join dubizzle was my genuine belief in the cause of the brand. As a passionate Egyptian, I know that, through promoting the dubizzle way of life, we can make a difference to this nation. It was amazing to meet with the minister and explain our cause so early in my new journey, and it’s proof that we are doing something very special here,” exclaimed Eraqi.
dubizzle, which was already the market-leading classifieds website in Egypt, has become a household name over the past month – with a number of high profile marketing efforts and partnerships seeing the brand come to life in various manifestations. This has led to Egyptians offering more than four times as many items for sale on dubizzle than in previous months, three times as many Egyptians are visiting the site, and buyer inquires that Egyptian sellers are receiving has more than tripled to over 50,000 per day. This boost in engagement has seen dubizzle move into the Alexa top 35 rankings in Egypt.
