MIAX PEARL Achieves over 4% Market Share on Eve of One-Year Anniversary
Infertility on the rise among UAE in the age group of 20-30
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 8 February 2018: Maternal age is the one of the most important factors to help identify a woman's odds of having a baby. According to IVI Middle East Fertility Clinic, recent analysis of the patient demographics reveal that of every 1000 patients that come to the clinic, the age group of 20 to 30 is also witnessing a surge in both, male and female infertility factors. The average percentage from this group is almost 15% of the total patient count which is the second highest. It is also noted that there has been a steady increase in female infertility cases amongst Emirati couples from this age group. Recent research by IVI Middle East counsellors also brings to light that the largest number of infertility cases are from the age group of 35-40 in the region; with the younger age group catching up too. It is also important to note that majority cases of female infertility conditions are triggered by causes that are specific to the population of this region.
“While lifestyle and eating habits are two critical factors that have led to an increase in infertility with the local age group between age 20-30, consanguinity is another very important reason for the increase in such cases amongst the Emirati population,” said Prof. Dr. Human Fatemi, Subspecialist Reproductive Medicine & Reproductive Surgery, Medical Director, IVI Middle East Fertility Clinic.
IVI Middle East Fertility Clinics are a part of the world leading IVF institution – IVI and offer the highest standards of fertility treatments. IVI group has the success record of 160,000 births worldwide and is widely respected for not just the science but also for research and advancements in the field of reproductive medicine. Almost 80% of the clinic’s patients in the UAE are local and 20% comprise other nationalities.
It seems that Emirati families face increased incidences of infertility. In females, parental consanguinity leads to a low ovarian reserve and due to rare sun exposure of the skin, Vitamin D deficiency is very common. Other factors are unhealthy diets and diabetes. Similarly, male infertility is related to obesity, excessive smoking, possible steroid consumption for bodybuilding and largely consanguinity,” added Dr. Barbara Lawrenz, Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecology, IVF, IVI Abu Dhabi.
Marriage is an important turning point in a woman's life in the UAE. Marriage and childbearing define life for nearly all women in the country. Until the last few decades, women throughout the region typically married while still in their teens or early 20s. However, with changing times, women give more importance to their careers and delay child-bearing which is also a contributing factor to rising infertility.
It is to be noted that a woman's age is the one of the most important factors determining her chance of pregnancy and a healthy birth because with age, the quality and quantity of her eggs decrease overtime, and the likelihood of miscarriages and birth defects increases. A study of the existing consultations at IVI clinics also shows that if a woman has healthy pregnancies in her 20s or early 30s, it does not mean that her attempt to have another child in her later 30s or 40s will be successful. She may face complications once she touches 35 or more, as the chances of her conceiving naturally are halved compared to her chance in twenties.
With infertility becoming a common issue amongst Emirati men and women, IVI Middle East Fertility Clinic is here to offer breakthrough medical treatments designed to address the growing fertility issues facing many couples today – both young and the not so young. IVI Middle East Fertility Clinics made its foray into the Middle East almost three years ago and within a short time span have already celebrated many successful pregnancies. Today, IVI Middle East Fertility Clinic boasts the highest success rate with more than 70 per cent successful pregnancies in the region. IVI Middle East Fertility Clinics are spread across Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Muscat to offer highly advanced international standard treatments to couples.
Turn on 5G: Ericsson completes 5G Platform for operators
Introduces 5G commercial software for radio and core networks to enable operators to launch 5G from Q4 2018
Evolves its Distributed Cloud offering to optimize applications across multiple sites, improving latency, security, and resilience of 5G-enabled use cases
Expands radio portfolio, supporting smooth evolution from 4G to 5G
Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) finalizes 5G-readiness for operators by enhancing its 5G Platform with new solutions for the radio and core network.
Today, the company launches 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) commercial software, based on the recently approved first 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR) standard. It also introduces a new category of radio products called Street Macro – a new site type that addresses the need of operators to grow in cities with limited available radio locations.
To capture growth opportunities presented by new 5G use cases, Ericsson expands its 5G Core System offering with new capabilities to support 5G NR and also enhances its Distributed Cloud solution.
Ericsson introduced its 5G Platform in February 2017 with additions made in September the same year. It comprises the 5G core, radio, and transport portfolios together with OSS/BSS, network services and security.
Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Business Area Networks at Ericsson, says: “Operators who want to be early with 5G now have the essential pieces for launching 5G networks already this year. With our expanded platform, they will get more efficient networks as well as opportunities to create new revenues from emerging consumer and industrial use cases.”
Giovanni Ferigo, CTO, TIM, says: “Ericsson is an important enabler of our 5G in-field innovation activities that span several cities in Italy. Together, last December – marking an Italian record - we activated a 5G NR cell in the mmW frequencies in the city of Torino, reaching speeds above 20Gbps. We are looking forward to testing Ericsson’s new solutions that will contribute to address the wide variety of use cases we are working on.”
5G software – enabling first-movers to launch 5G
Available in the fourth quarter of 2018, Ericsson’s 5G radio network software provides multi-band support for global deployment. It will allow operators to use new frequency spectrum as it becomes available.
The 5G radio network software announced today complements Ericsson’s already launched baseband and 5G radios. Operators can simply activate their 5G networks and take the first steps with commercial 5G capabilities and new applications leveraging advanced mobile broadband services.
This will cater efficiently for growing data traffic and enable access to multimedia content, such as 4K/8K video streaming and virtual reality/augmented reality. According to Ericsson’s new economic study of enhanced mobile broadband, evolution to 5G will enable 10 times lower cost per gigabyte than current 4G.
The radio offering is complemented with 5G Core commercial software optimized for 5G throughput, network capacity and scalability. Ericsson's Packet Core and Unified Data Management solutions will deliver enhancements throughout 2018 to efficiently support 5G services. These solutions can be further upgraded with new functionalities as the 3GPP 5G standard evolves.
Ericsson Distributed Cloud – accelerating 5G and IoT growth
Ericsson also evolves its Distributed Cloud offering for cloud application deployment across multiple sites - central, distributed, and edge. Managed, orchestrated, and perceived as one solution, it improves latency, security, and resilience, and fulfils regulatory requirements for 5G-enabled use cases. Ericsson Distributed Cloud combines the best of telecom and cloud to enable networks as open cloud platforms for all workloads, including telecom, consumer, and enterprise applications.
As part of the Ericsson Distributed Cloud, Ericsson will support deployments of hardware options in a multi-vendor framework. With fast deployable telecom-grade open software for remote upgrade and operation, Ericsson brings Software Defined Infrastructure (SDI) to the edge. To support efficient deployment of cloud native applications, Ericsson also expands the offering with support for containers in a distributed cloud infrastructure.
Radio portfolio expanded – supporting smooth evolution from 4G to 5G
Ericsson adds a new category of radio products for cities, which it calls Street Macro – a new layer between macro and micro. These radios will be on building facades with a smaller footprint but the necessary strength to secure network efficiency and coverage.
Furthermore, the company unveils new radio products supporting Massive MIMO technology. These products enable a smooth evolution from 4G to 5G and address the need for increased capacity, while simplifying use for wider adoption.
All installed base radios from the Ericsson Radio System delivered since 2015 will be 5G NR-capable by a remote software installation.
Ed Gubbins, Senior Analyst, Global Telecom Technology & Software, at GlobalData, says: “The combination of Ericsson’s new products and 5G support for radios already deployed in the field will give operators access to a very broad and flexible 5G portfolio. They will be able to move quickly into enhanced mobile broadband and address the new opportunities with industrial applications.”
Roberto Kompany, Senior Analyst at Analysys Mason says: “Reduced latency, improved throughput, better security, reliability and regulatory compliance are all critical capabilities that operators must deliver for 5G use cases such as augmented reality, assisted factory and autonomous driving vehicles. A distributed cloud capability that enables cloud computing, storage and networking to be placed flexibly in central, regional and edge locations and which can be managed seamlessly, end-to-end, is an important component of a 5G platform.”

Why Change-Hungry Young Generations are the Key to Unlocking Growth
By Sabby Gill, Executive Vice President (EVP) International, Epicor Software
The struggle to recruit skilled workers is a recurring concern for manufacturing businesses across the world. An EEF report recently revealed that three-quarters of manufacturers have struggled to recruit skilled workers in the last three years.
This industry analysis suggests that manufacturers are dealing with a lack of both quantity and quality when it comes to applicants, with not enough people applying for roles and job-seekers lacking the technical skills required to fill available vacancies. The report cautions that manufacturers’ plans to drive productivity improvements and to capitalise on Industry 4.0 could be derailed and with demand for skills set to rocket, the situation is about to spiral further.
Yet, with new generations entering the workforce perhaps there’s light at the end of the tunnel. These younger generations bring with them a fresh outlook and a desire for personal growth that, if harnessed properly, could be the injection that businesses need to succeed. However, attracting this new talent is not always easy.
Changing workplaces
Younger generations are entering the workforce at a time of technological change and economic disruption. These forces are shaping the choices they make and the experiences they seek when applying for jobs. What’s more, the career choices this generation makes now, will in turn eventually shape the global economy.
Organisations face a unique set of challenges when it comes to integrating new generations into the workforce, and balancing their needs and expectations, along with those of existing workers. For example, the so-called Baby Boomer generation, which comprises of workers born before the sixties, has very different ways of working compared to Generation X, currently aged 36-55. Studies, such as those by The Gerontologist and The Open University have characterised Baby Boomers as motivated by position, perks and prestige, making them believe that Generation X and younger generations should, like them, conform to a culture of overwork.
Some members of these generations may be soon to retire, but they will nonetheless need to work alongside much younger generations first—including Millennials, who are currently under the age of 30 and members of Generation Z, who were born in the late nineties. These groups, in contrast to their older colleagues, grew up in an environment where diversity and the need to balance multiple tasks at once was the norm. Thus, they seek flexibility, team work, and the acceptance of their ideas.
What’s more, as these younger generations come up through the ranks, they are rapidly becoming the most dominant population in today’s workplace, bringing with them innovative ways of working, fresh ideas and challenges for their older colleagues.
Indeed, a clash in attitudes and priorities has resulted in many commentators giving younger generations a bad rap. Only recently, the CBI published a report which showed a third of companies are concerned about young people’s attitude to work, believing that many graduates and school leavers lack the mindset and skills required to thrive in the current workplace.
But are we giving young people a hard time when we should perhaps be looking at the assets they bring to a company instead?
Renewed focus on growth
As part of its global growth survey, Epicor set about trying to better understand how attitudes to business growth vary amongst different generations. Millennials and Generation Z, referred to as Gen ZY in the research, want to know that work is a place of growth and development, where they can find their purpose and be passionate about what they do.
The survey found that these generations are more “excited” about the growth experienced in their company than Baby Boomers (29% versus 27%), and that they are also a lot more optimistic about growth trends. Three quarters (72%) believed their business’s growth prospects had improved in the last 12 months, whereas just 50 per cent of Baby Boomers felt the same.
This optimism of youth can be harnessed by organisations looking to drive growth. For example, we are seeing the proliferation of creative office design, short term office leases and co-working spaces across regions around the world, as well as increases in flexibility in work schedules, work attire and human resource policies at both large and small companies.
The use of technology is also a factor, as having access to the latest tech goes a long way towards attracting the best talent, boosting morale and driving operational efficiencies. Many of these ideas and trends are refreshing and useful to growing innovative companies.
New generational challenges
Generation ZY is likely to have to confront obstacles to prosperity that their parents didn’t face. They are better educated than previous generations—but in today’s world, many, if not most, will be forced to retool and switch careers several times during their working life.
IT advancement is in many ways a double-edged sword for young people. The digital economy has enabled the creation of millions of new jobs, but artificial intelligence and robotics may soon displace many traditional manufacturing roles.
However, the good news is that many younger people are aware of these challenges and often look to the application of the latest technologies to overcome their problems. The Epicor survey found that younger generations are more likely to embrace new innovative technologies. Over half (52%) see better technology as a solution to current stresses and challenges, compared to 45 per cent of Gen X, and 38 per cent Baby Boomers.
But beware of the ‘one size fits all’ mindset, because not every employee will fit the description of their generation. Mark Zuckerberg for example, who was born in 1984, is arguably too old to be classed as a Millennial but is nonetheless renowned for his capacity for being on the cutting edge of social technologies. Many Gen X and Baby Boomer employees too, are also technologically forward-thinking and willing to adapt to today’s digital world.
As the generation of digital natives makes waves in the work environment, organisations that play to these young people’s strengths will ultimately gain thriving and motivated workers, allowing them to grow in the long term.
This involves engaging with young workers on new, social and truly interactive platforms, such as using social enterprise resource planning (ERP) tools to collaborate on projects, or by using gamification methods to motivate teams and drive results. Also important is the need to utilise the latest technology for training, for efficiency, and for automating manual tasks that might otherwise leave younger generations bored. This is the future workplace. Is your business ready?
