ESET Repeats Best Score in AV-Test Self-Protection Test for the Third Consecutive Time

Dubai, UAE – 11 May 2017: The latest AV-Test released their new Self-Protection of Antivirus Software test, examining 32 cybersecurity solutions on file protection with Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) and Data Execution Prevention (DEP). For the third time, ESET has participated in the test with both business and consumer product and in both cases has repeated its flawless performance, scoring 100%. ESET is the only vendor in the history of the test to reach the maximum score each time. 

AV-Test examined all the key self-protection capabilities of the tested cybersecurity software in connection with user-mode PE (portable executable) files for 32- and 64-bit solutions. Additionally, the valid certificate signature of files and HTTPS protocol were part of the latest assessment.

DSA Global Summit Unleashes the Spectrum Requirements for the Next Generation Internet

CAPE TOWN, South Africa-- (BUSINESS WIRE/ ME NewsWire)-- The Dynamic Spectrum Alliance (DSA), the National Communications Authority (NCA), Ghana, and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) have given the opening keynote addresses to kick off the 2017 DSA Global Summit in Cape Town, South Africa. Welcoming everyone to the conference, the keynote speakers summarised how important spectrum issues are today, to help solve the digital divide and make Internet access a reality everywhere.

The DSA Global Summit (May 9-11) is being co-hosted with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), which recently published draft regulations on the use of TV White Space (TVWS) in the country and are open for public consultation until 19 May 2017.

Following the morning keynotes, Kalpak Gude, President of the DSA, presented a session titled ‘Spectrum Sharing Unleashed.’ The session focused on the spectrum requirements for the next generation Internet and the benefits of dynamic spectrum access to help meet those spectrum needs. Gude also discussed how dynamic access technology is ready today to help bring connectivity to everyone, everywhere.

Speaking during the conference, Gude commented: “The demands for greater broadband access continue to grow at a rapid pace. As the world becomes more mobile, the Internet has also become far more dependent on wireless access. As we move to the next generation networks that will support the demands of an always connected society, we must confront the reality that four billion of our fellow citizens on earth lack any real connectivity. They are being left behind as the fortunate few race ahead. Access to spectrum is part of the solution to both problems confronting regulators and society.”

Before the conference broke for lunch, industry leaders from the finance community, government and commercial operators came together on a panel, moderated by Mr. Frank McCosker, General Manager, Affordable Access Microsoft 4Afrika Initiatives, titled ‘Closing the Digital Divide: Addressing financial challenges to facilitate economic growth.’ Participants included representatives from the International Finance Corporation, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), Prescient, the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa (USAASA), Project Isizwe and Zenzeleni Networks. The panel looked at case studies of how new global connectivity ecosystems based on new spectrum approaches are financed.

“A lack of access to capital in the emerging markets of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean has remained one of the main barriers to commercially sustainable investments in new spectrum-related technologies,” said Rob Henley, Principal, Prescient Capital. “Smart financing approaches are required to push new ecosystems that lower costs and speed of deployment.”

The DSA also hosted its regulator workshop yesterday, which brought together regulators and government officials from Africa, Europe, Latin America, North America, and Asia around the world to discuss spectrum sharing and dynamic spectrum access on an international-wide level.

Two new members are also being welcomed to the DSA this week, including ViaSat, a leading global broadband services and technology company and Brightwave, a telecoms and broadband network and services company. Brightwave has developed an extensive last mile Fibre and WiFi network within the City of Johannesburg to deliver high speed but affordable broadband access to the majority.

AUC ALUM, FORMER FACULTY MOURAD WAHBA TACKLES REGIONAL CHALLENGES IN LEADING UN ROLES

May 8, 2017, Cairo – With more than 20 years of experience at the United Nations, Mourad Wahba '80, '82, alumnus and former economics professor at The American University in Cairo (AUC), was appointed as assistant administrator and director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In his new post, Wahba hopes to bring attention to what he perceives as an important segment of the Arab population. “A third of the population of Arab countries is between the ages of 15 and 29,” he pointed out. “They are our hope for the future of the region, and they must be the focus of our programming.”

With a wide area of focus and an array of challenges at hand, it is important to identify the major issues and priorities.  “In view of the various conflicts in the region, I have to emphasize issues of peace building,” Wahba noted. Some of the challenges he detailed were climate change, particularly important with the series of droughts experienced; the role of women in development and governance; and the accessibility of jobs for youth.

Wahba also sees non-governmental institutions as integral instruments in shaping the Arab region. “I hope to strengthen the role of civil society, especially the role of women’s organizations, as this sector will truly factor into progress for our region,” he said.

Still, true progress will emerge out of collaboration among all sectors and networks. “I will work closely with governments, donors and colleagues in the United Nations, reaching out to non-state actors in both civil society and the private sector,” he affirmed.

The work of the UNDP in a region as large as the Arab world requires a hefty budget in order to tackle the broad rangeof challenges facing different countries. Last year, the budget totaled more than 720 million dollars. “The work is challenging but extremely interesting, as I cover a range of countries, from low-income regions such as Somalia to middle-income countries like Egypt and high-income countries such as the United Arab Emirates,” explained Wahba.

Wahba feels his time at AUC both as a student and professor exposed him to the international nature of the University community and helped to carve out his path toward a career in international relations. “I think what inspired me most were the conversations with colleagues from all over the world as well as the rich library resources,” he noted.

His interactions with students were formative as well. He explained, “The student body was diverse and filled with brilliant minds from whom I learned very much.”

Wahba recalls originally seeing himself pursuing an academic career, with a side interest in public affairs. “I sort of wandered into a career in international relations,” he said.

After teaching with the economics department at AUC for six years, he joined the United Nations in 1993 with the election of the late Boutros Boutros-Ghali as secretary-general. “I went to the United Nations, originally planning to stay for one year to add a practical side to my academic interests, and I have been there ever since,” he said.

Among the critical voices working to shape the Arab region is that of Egypt. As a member of the Security Council, Egypt “has a strong voice in defining peacekeeping priorities inside as well as outside of the region,” shared Wahba.

Beyond traditional peacekeeping, Wahba also explained that Egypt plays a leading role on a multitude of fronts. “Egypt is active on issues that cut across traditional areas,” he explained.
