African Farmers embark on 4 Day Journey to demand Investment in Ecological Farming

The farmers will make stops in Machakos, Makueni and Nairobi counties

NAIROBI, Kenya, October 11, 2016/APO/ -- 

30 smallholder farmers from Kiambu, Meru, Machakos and Makueni counties today, set off from Thika on a 4-day resilience journey that will see them engage county leaders and Kenyans on the ideal agricultural system that they envision for Kenya and the continent, exhibit produce, share knowledge and share seeds to their counterparts. The farmers will make stops in Machakos, Makueni and Nairobi counties with a clear message ahead of World Food Day:

“We, as farmers and consumers from around Kenya, call upon the Government of Kenya and International aid donors to listen to our demands, to move away from conventional agriculture and support ecological farming. Conventional agriculture has failed us and will continue to do so as climate change worsens….” reads in part a demand letter written by Kenyan smallholder farmers to the local governments of Kenya and International Aid Donors in Kenya.

The farmers say they have decided to support each other because they have not received sufficient support from authorities and donors. Instead a lot of support has gone into industrial agriculture – a fatally flawed agricultural model that places farmers in a cycle of debt as well as reliance on harmful and expensive chemicals and seeds.

With support from The Kenya Biodiversity Coalition (KBioC), Greenpeace Africa (Greenpeace.org/Africa/en), The Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN), the Institute for Culture and Ecology (ICE) and The Kenya Small Scale Farmers’ Forum (KSSF), the farmers will use this resilience journey to showcase and prove the benefits of ecological farming.

We call upon Governments and Donors to put in place mechanisms that allow for a paradigm shift towards ecological farming

Ecological farming not only supports local farmer’s livelihoods, it also, “enhances their economic empowerment and is conscious of environmental stability and builds community resilience to adverse effects of climate change,” says Martin Muriuki, Executive Director, Institute for Culture and Ecology (ICE).

The farmers are sure that the solution to address hunger in Kenya lies within the country’s borders. With the right support, they can feed Kenyans with healthy, nutritious food that is grown ecologically. Ecological farming is not a new practice; it combines local farmers’ knowledge with the most recent scientific knowledge to create new technologies and practices that increase yields without negatively impacting the environment and some of our smallholder farmers are already practising it by building on the traditional agriculture methods based on local landraces and knowledge.

“The farmers’ appeal comes at a very critical time, the current food system is broken, the environment is damaged and the current industrial agricultural model has left thousands hungry and dependant on technologies that are unable to withstand weather shocks and lined the pockets of a few corporates,” states Greenpeace Africa’s senior Food for Life campaign manager, Nokutula Mhene.

The effects of climate change are starting to bite; the Kenya meteorological services have warned that La Niña is near meaning that many parts of Kenya will experience depressed rains in 2016. There is an urgent need to support smallholder family farmers to practice ecological farming through access to irrigation and access to affordable organic inputs and protection of local farmers against middlemen exploitation. The future, states Anne Maina from KBioC, “is in practicing agroecology and not synthetic chemical driven farming.”

Ecological farming is a bouquet of techniques to produce environmentally-sustainable and healthy food for local people. It is a proven “agricultural production method that has at its core resilience, equitability, food sovereignty, and environmental sustainability. We call upon Governments and Donors to put in place mechanisms that allow for a paradigm shift towards ecological farming,” says Greenpeace Africa’s Executive Director, Njeri Kabeberi.

At the end of the journey, the farmers will hand over a letter to International aid agencies in Nairobi. The letter will outline priority areas in the agricultural sector that agencies should invest into.

المؤتمر سيناقش سبل بناء قدرات الفتيات والنساء في الشرق الأوسط

الشارقة، 11  أكتوبر 2016

تشارك أصغر حاصلة على جائزة نوبل، ملالا يوسفزي، الناشطة الباكستانية في مجال تعليم الإناث والتي ساهمت في إطلاق صندوق ملالا، في الدورة الثانية من المؤتمر الدولي "الاستثمار في المستقبل"، الذي تنظمه مؤسسة "القلب الكبير"، المؤسسة الإنسانية العالمية المعنية بمساعدة اللاجئين والمحتاجين حول العالم، التي تتخذ من إمارة الشارقة مقراً لها، وهيئة الأمم المتحدة للمرأة، يومي 19 و20 أكتوبر الجاري، تحت شعار "بناء قدرات النساء والفتيات في الشرق الأوسط".

وسيحضر المؤتمر الذي يقام تحت رعاية كريمة من صاحب السمو الشيخ الدكتور سلطان بن محمد القاسمي، عضو المجلس الأعلى حاكم الشارقة، وقرينته ، سمو الشيخة جواهر بنت محمد القاسمي، رئيسة مؤسسة "القلب الكبير"، رئيسة مؤسسة "نماء" للارتقاء بالمرأة، نخبة من الناشطين ومناصري المساواة بين الجنسين، إلى جانب ممثلي الحكومات والمنظمات الدولية، والمنظمات غير الحكومية، وعدد من الأكاديميين والإعلاميين والخبراء من المنطقة.

وقالت مريم الحمادي مدير حملة سلام يا صغار التابعة لمؤسسة القلب الكبير: "لدينا إيمان مطلق بحق الفتيات في التعليم، وقد كانت دولة الإمارات منذ  تأسيسها، داعمة للفتيات في الحصول على التعليم المناسب لهن، إيماناً من قيادتها الرشيدة بأن المعرفة تسهم في تعزيز قدرات النساء، وتمنحهن قدرة أكبر في المساهمة الفاعلة ببناء مجتمعهن، فالمرأة المتعلمة تكون أقدر على العطاء، وتقدم لأسرتها ووطنها كل ما يرتقي بهم ويوفر لهم الاستقرار والتطور والتقدم".

وأكدت الحمادي أن الناشطة الباكستانية ملالا يوسفزي تمثل قدوة لأبناء جيلها في إصرارها على المناداة بتشجيع الفتيات على التعليم، ومواجهة القيود التي تمنع النساء من أن يكون لهن بصمة في مجتمعهن ووطنهن.

يذكر أن ملالا يوسفزي قد اشتهرت بدفاعها عن حقوق الإنسان وخاصةً التعليم وحقوق المرأة في منطقة وادي سوات ضمن مُقاطعة خيبر "بختونخوا" شمال غرب باكستان، حيث كانت تعاني منطقتها من محاولة حظِّر حركة طالبان للفتيات من الذهاب إلى المدارس. وأعلنت ملالا رفضها للقرار الذي اتخذته طالبان عام 2009 بمنع الفتيات من التعليم، ولم تكتف بالتعبير عن رفضها للقرار بمواصلتها الذهاب إلى المدرسة برفقة زميلاتها القليلات اللواتي قررن التمسك بحقهن في التعليم، بل خاضت في تحدي  لهذا القرار عبر مدونة كانت تكتبها باللغة الأردية لهيئة الإذاعة البريطانية "بي بي سي"، وكانت تؤكد من خلالها أن رغبتها في التعليم أقوى من خوفها من طالبان.

وفي 12 يوليو 2013 وفي عيد ميلادها الـ16، تحدَثت ملالا خلال اجتماع الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة للشباب، ودعت إلى دعم التَعليم في جميع أنحاء العالم. وقد أطلقت الأُمم المتَحدة على هذا اليوم لاحقاً "يوم ملالا"، حيثُ كان هذا الخطاب أول خطاب علني لها بعد  حادث الإغتيال الذي تعرضت له في أكتوبر 2012، ما جعلها تتولَى قيادة الشباب في الأُمم المتحدة، وجاءت كلمة ملالا أمام أكثر من 500 طالب وطالبة من جميع أنحاء العالم، بحضور الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة بان كي مون.

وحصلت ملالا على العديد من الجوائز، أبرزها جائزة نوبل للسلام عام 2014،  والتي منحت  لها لكفاحها من أجل حصول الفتيات على حقهم بالتعليم، واعتُبرت أصغر حاصلة على جائزة نوبل في العالم، حيث كانت تبلغ من العمر 17 عاماً.

وتعليقاً على مشاركتها في المؤتمر، أعربت ملالا يوسفزي عن سعادتها بإتاحة الفرصة أمامها للحديث عن التحديات التي تواجه الفتيات الراغبات بالحصول على التعليم في بلدها، وأهمية تمكين الفتيات من تحقيق رغباتهن بالمساهمة الفاعلة في تطوير مجتمعاتهن، والمشاركة في مسيرة التنمية، وأكدت أن الحضور الدولي الكبير في المؤتمر، سيتيح لها إيصال صوت الكثيرات من بنات جيلها، من أجل رسم مستقبل أفضل لهن.

وفي سياق متصل سيشارك في المؤتمر أيضاً الدبلوماسي الباكستاني ضیاء الدین یوسفزي، والد الناشطة ملالا، والذي يشغل حالياً منصب مستشار خاص للأمم المتحدة معني بالتعليم العالمي، كما يشغل أيضاً منصب مستشار تعليم في المفوضية العليا الباكستانية في مدينة برمنغهام بالمملكة المتحدة، حيث سيشارك كمتحدث في الجلسة النقاشية الأولى من الحلقات الحوارية لليوم الأول من المؤتمر والتي تحمل عنوان "مواجهة التطرف العنيف".

وتسعى الدورة الثانية من المؤتمر الدولي "الاستثمار في المستقبل" التي تنظمها كل من مؤسسة "القلب الكبير"، المؤسسة الإنسانية العالمية المعنية بمساعدة اللاجئين والمحتاجين حول العالم، التي تتخذ من إمارة الشارقة مقراً لها، وهيئة الأمم المتحدة للمساواة بين الجنسين وتمكين المرأة (هيئة الأمم المتحدة للمرأة) إلى تسليط الضوء على ضرورة إدراج النساء والفتيات واستهدافهن بشكل خاص في عملية التخطيط للتمكين الاقتصادي، بالإضافة إلى الاهتمام باحتياجاتهن في التعليم ، والتدريب على المهارات، والتوظيف، وضمان الوصول إلى الموارد، لاسيما للأسر التي تعيلها النساء، في ظل القيود الاجتماعية والاقتصادية المفروضة على المرأة في العديد من البلدان.

كما يهدف المؤتمر إلى الاعتراف بالمرأة كعامل أساسي للتغيير في عمليتي السلام والتنمية الاقتصادية، إضافة إلى تنسيق الجهود في مجال التنمية والتخطيط لبناء السلام، وتحقيق المساواة بين الجنسين كجزء لا يتجزأ من مجمل الخطط والسياسات والبرامج التي تهدف إلى تمكين النساء والفتيات وتعزيز دورهن، وتقديم الدعم اللازم لهن، بما فيهن اللاجئات والنازحات، فضلاً عن متابعة الإجراءات العملية المستهدفة التي تلبي احتياجات النساء والفتيات، وتنصفهن حقوقهن.

AUC TO DISCUSS THE ECONOMIC POWER OF WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS
