This year, Kaspersky Lab products for Windows have integrated several new functions. Now users can protect their data from being intercepted during an unsafe Internet connection with the help of Secure Connection. In addition, the security solution can patch potential "holes" in their device security with Software Updater and Software Cleaner. Secure Connection Secure Connection allows users to connect to the Internet safely, by encrypting all data sent and received through the network (1). This is especially important when performing financial operations, authorisation on sites, or transferring confidential information, as in these cases traffic interception by a stranger could cause users serious (for example, financial) losses. This function is especially useful while traveling, when many people are increasingly connecting to insecure Wi-Fi networks to stay in touch. According to a Kaspersky Lab study (http://APO.af/AevM56), globally, every fifth (18%) user has fallen victim to cybercriminals when traveling. This is not surprising considering the fact that (and what a coincidence!) – one in five (18%) travelers does not take any steps to protect themselves while online. Secure Connection is now a necessary protection measure when connecting to a public Wi-Fi. The Kaspersky Lab protection component, Secure Connection, can be launched from the main window of Kaspersky Internet Security – multi-device. It can also be activated automatically when the device is connected to public Wi-Fi or the user is inputting confidential information online, such as on banking websites, online stores, payment systems, e-mail, social networks, etc. Within the security product’s license, users have 200 MB of encrypted traffic at their daily disposal, and for an additional monthly or annual fee they can get an unlimited volume of traffic. Software Updater One of the common methods of malware penetrating the computer is the use of errors (so-called vulnerabilities) in the programmes installed on it. Developers regularly update their products, however not all users regularly update these on their devices. Software Updater can automatically find the applications that need to be updated and, if the user agrees, install the latest versions from vendor sites on their computer. The user can also request the update of an application manually or add any of them to the list of applications that should not be updated (for example, if the older version is required). Software Cleaner According to the Kaspersky Lab study (http://APO.af/0Z7cEj), 37% of users store programmes that they do not use on their device. In addition to the fact that this overloads the device memory, it also provides extra opportunities for cybercriminals to penetrate the system. Software Cleaner scans all applications installed on the computer and marks those posing potential risk. Users sometimes do not even know about these applications being installed on their devices or are unaware of their negative effects. Software Cleaner will inform users of a programme if it has been installed without their awareness or clear consent (for example, as additional software during the installation of another application), or if it slows down the user’s device, provides incomplete/incorrect information about its functions, operates in the background mode, shows banners and messages without permission (e.g., advertising), or is rarely used. Upon receipt of a report from Software Cleaner, the user can either remove or leave the application in question. In addition to the new functions, Kaspersky Internet Security – multi-device (http://APO.af/PSUxYu) 2017 has been enhanced with improved advanced technologies such as the multi-level protection of financial transactions (with Safe Money), the prevention of the installation of unwanted applications (with Application Manager, part of the former Change Control feature) and the blocking of advertising banners in the browser (with Anti-Banner).

VTT develops combustion technologies for biomass – aims at negative emissions

VTT is seeking a carbon capture technology for Finnish power and heat production plants. The first pilots were implemented, using wood pellets, at VTT’s Bioruukki and the results are promising.

Finland is well on its way to achieving the 2020 climate goals, but it is already clear that the goals for 2050 are impossible to attain without major changes in energy production and other industries.

VTT has calculated that Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) could cost-effectively cover one third of Finland's share of reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. More than 80 per cent of carbon capture measures would concern the burning or refining biomass, and the rest would concern the coal-intensive industry. Biomass is a renewable natural fuel that binds carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as it grows. If the carbon dioxide generated by burning of biomass is captured and permanently stored deep in bedrock, carbon dioxide can be removed from the atmosphere.

Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) is a promising carbon capture technology suitable for new plants. This technology produces flue gas that consists of carbon dioxide and water vapour as a by-product. Since the gas contains no nitrogen, carbon dioxide is easy to separate and capture – unlike in alternative technologies. Biomass burning with the help of the CLC technology (Bio-CLC) is a new research area, and VTT's experiments in the sector are pioneering on a global scale.

Carbon capture consumes energy. However, the method based on oxygen carriers promises moderate energy consumption. The separation and capture of carbon dioxide become easier, when the fuel is combusted in a gas mixture without nitrogen provided by air. However, it takes a great deal of energy to produce oxygen from air. Researchers of CLC technology are therefore interested in how oxygen – embedded in some kind of carrier, such as metal oxide –could be fed into the power plant boiler.

The first experiments at VTT's Bioruukki proved the functionality of Bio-CLC as a biomass burning method. The fuels used were untreated and heat-treated wood pellets, and the oxygen carrier used was ilmenite, a natural material mainly containing titanium-iron oxide. In the pilot, the thermal input reached 20 kW. This input level is 100 times higher than that achieved on a laboratory scale and approximately 1,000 times lower than the production rate of an industrial power plant boiler.

When using traditional combustion technologies, chlorine compounds in biomass cause an elevated high-temperature corrosion risk. For this reason, the steam temperature must be kept low, which reduces efficiency. Bio-CLC technology allows the use of high temperatures and the achievement of a high efficiency rate. No signs of a risk of corrosion were detected in the experiments conducted by VTT. However, further testing is required to verify the results.

The method improves the efficiency of power production, because higher steam temperatures than usual can be implemented, without causing any corrosion problems on heat-exchange surfaces.

VTT carried out the combustion testing in the Carbon Capture and Storage Program (CCSP) coordinated by CLIC Innovation Oy, and financed by Tekes, Fortum Corporation, Helen Ltd and Amec Foster Wheeler Energia Oy. The Negative CO2project, financed by Nordic Energy Research, acted as project partner.

Further development of the method, combustion trials, and commercialisation will proceed in the joint Nordic spearhead project Nordic Energy Research, in which VTT is involved.

Not yet included in EU’s emissions trading system

The development of Bio-CLC technology calls for a compensatory allowance for carbon capture generated by biomass burning. Such an allowance should be similar to that applied to fossil-based capture. However, biomass combustion facilities are not currently part of EU’s emission trading system. Therefore, there are no economic incentives for applying CCS to biomass combustion. At the moment, with the technology incomplete, this defect in the emissions trading legislation is not a problem, but it will hamper the development of the technology. VTT is currently in the process of preparing a publication that will propose means of compensating for biomass-based carbon capture in emissions trading.

Carbon capture method in the Bio-CLC process

-          A metal oxide is employed as a bed material for carrying the oxygen into the reactor.

-          Once the oxygen has separated from the metal oxide and reacted with the fuel, the reduced oxygen carrier is then returned to a separate reactor, where it is re-oxidized with air.

-          The flue gas primarily consists of pure carbon dioxide and water vapour, from which carbon dioxide and other impurities are easy to separate.

-          Methods using oxygen carriers have not been commercialised so far.

Drake & Scull Announces the appointment of Wael Allan as the Chief Executive Officer

Khaldoun Tabari to continue to serve the company as the Vice-Chairman and a member of the Board of Directors & member of the Executive Committee

UAE, 10 October, 2016 – Drake & Scull International PJSC (“DSI” or the “Company”), a regional leader in engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning, announced the resignation approval of Mr. Khaldoun Tabari from his post as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the appointment of Mr. Wael Allan, currently serving as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) as the company’s new Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Wael will assume the new role on the 10th of October 2016, which marks the final phase of a six-month management transition process initiated with his appointment as (COO) in the first half of the year. Mr. Tabari submitted his resignation to the board on August 2016 for approval until the new CEO appointment was finalized.

Wael Allan succeeds Khaldoun Tabari, who will step down from his current role as the Group CEO and continues to serve DSI as a Non-Executive Board Member, Member of the Executive Committee, Vice-Chairman and a major shareholder.  

Wael Allan is an industry veteran with more than 26 years of global management experience spanning EPC and construction across USA, Europe, Far East and the Middle East.

Prior to his appointment at DSI, he served as the CEO for Arcadis Middle East, and progressed through senior management roles for reputed firms including Hyder Consulting, Skanska USA Buildings, Washington Group International and Raytheon Engineers and Constructors, amongst others.

Egypt Accounts for 18% of All Ransomware Threats in North Africa

Trend Micro Detects On Average 19,797 Malware in Egypt per Month

Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704), a global leader in security software, is concerned that Egypt is seeing a sustained rise in threat activity, even as the country account for 18% of all Ransomware activity in North Africa. The security vendor also detects on average 19,797 pieces of malware a month in Egypt.

This year alone Trend Micro has seen a 54% increase in the number of threats across North Africa, as compared to the same period last year. The Trend Micro Vice President for the region is in Egypt, talking to customer and government entities, educating them on the active threats, and to reconfirm Trend Micro’s commitment to the country.

Across North Africa spam email averages at 2.8 million, and Egypt accounts for 22% of all spam generated in the region. Malicious mobile apps download is also on the rise across the country. On average there are 44,938 mobile downloads, with 1160 different viruses attached to these downloads.

A worrying concern for Trend Micro is the rise in the number of banking malwares in the country. Currently the security vendor is seeing on average 85 banking malware in the country, which accounts for 12.5% of all banking malware being tracked across North Africa.

Globally Trend Micro is seeing on average 250 million threats a day. With the growing presence of ransomware and other malicious threats, it is imperative that companies and individuals rely on the right security software and have adequate security protocols in place to prevent cyberattacks.

أعربت ’تريند مايكرو‘، (المدرجة في بورصة طوكيو تحت الرمز  TSE: 4704؛ TSE:4704) والرائد العالمي في الأمن السحابي، عن مخاوفها المرتبطة بإستمرار إرتفاع معدل نشاطات وتهديدات البرمجيات الخبيثة التي تشهدها مصر إذ تتعرض لنسبة 18% من إجمالي تهديدات برمجيات الفدية الخبيثة في شمال إفريقيا. كما صرحت الشركة عن إكتشافها 19,797 برمجية خبيثة تتعرض لها مصر شهرياً.

وشهدت ’تريند مايكرو‘ هذا العام زيادةً بنسبة 54% في عدد التهديدات التي تتعرض لها شمال إفريقيا مقارنةً بنفس الفترة من العام المنصرم. وتحتل مصر الصدارة في قائمة الجهات المستهدفة وينبغي على الشركات والأفراد والجهات الحكومية أن تولي أهمية كبيرة للتصدي للهجمات الإلكترونية لما لها من آثار قد تكون مدمرة وذلك وفقاً لإيهاب معوض، نائب الرئيس لمنطقة البحر الأبيض المتوسط والشرق الأوسط وإفريقيا وروسيا ورابطة الدول المستقلة في ’تريند مايكرو‘ الذي علّق قائلاً: "لا تزال مصر تشكل حجر الأساس في اقتصاد المنطقة وشمال أفريقيا وهذا عامل كفيل بجذب مجرمي الإنترنت. تولي ’تريند مايكرو‘ اهتماماً خاصاً بمصر ونواصل التزامنا ببذل الجهود للحفاظ على أمان عملائنا والبلاد بشكل عام من التهديدات الإلكترونية. ونمتلك كشركة، موارد كبيرة فعالة لمساعدة عملائنا في التعامل مع أي هجوم على الشبكة".

و يتواجد نائب الرئيس للمنطقة في ’تريند مايكرو‘ في مصر لتثقيف العملاء والجهات الحكومية حول التهديدات النشطة وتجديد التزام الشركة بالأمان الإلكتروني في البلاد.

يصل معدل البريد الإلكتروني المزعج في شمال إفريقيا إلى 2.8 مليون رسالة وتحتل مصر لوحدها نسبة 22% من إجمالي البريد المزعج المولّد في المنطقة. كما يشهد عدد التطبيقات الخبيثة المرتبطة بتحميل البرامج ارتفاعاً ملحوظاً في البلاد وكمعدل وسطي، هناك 44,938 حالة تحميل برامج عبر الأجهزة المحمولة يرتبط بها 1160 فيروس مختلف.

وما يثير قلق ’تريند مايكرو‘ على وجه الخصوص هو ارتفاع عدد البرمجيات المصرفية الخبيثة التي تستهدف مصر. إذ تشهد الشركة حالياً 85 برمجية مصرفية خبيثة كمعدل وسطي وهو ما يقارب 12.5% من إجمالي البرمجيات المصرفية الخبيثة التي يجري تعقبها في شمال إفريقيا.

أما على الصعيد العالمي، تسجل ’تريند مايكرو‘ معدلاً وسطياً من 250 مليون تهديد يومياً. ومع ارتفاع عدد التهديدات الخبيثة وبرمجيات الفدية، لا بد من اعتماد الشركات على برامج الأمان الصحيحة والبروتوكولات الكافية للتصدي للهجمات الإلكترونية.
