KSA increases efforts in building more hotels to offer better services to Hajj pilgrims

September 28, 2015: After oil, tourism for religious purposes is currently one of the biggest sources of revenue for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The country has undertaken several initiatives in the recent years to build more hotels and provide better services to pilgrims who visit Makkah each year, in order to facilitate expanding number of religious tourists.

Alongside government entities, the private sector has been contributing towards the expansion taking place within this sector, where several travel companies have invested in many projects to receive the growing numbers of pilgrims. Every year during the Hajj season, the Elaf Group of Companies for Travel & Tourism announces its services to facilitate smooth service for Hajj performers through its agents in the GCC, Arab countries, Europe and the Americas. Under the Hajj regulations by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj, pilgrims must apply for their visas and arrange travel through approved tour operators in their respective countries. Each agency is issued a certain allotment of visas.

Latest global innovations in electric and hybrid vehicle technology to share UAE spotlight

More than 200 delegates expected for inaugural International Conference on Future Mobility 2015 in Dubai

Dubai, UAE: The UAE will be the focal point of the latest global advancements in electric vehicle technology when the Middle East’s first international conference on innovations in electric and hybrid vehicles makes its November 2015 debut in Dubai.

The International Conference on Future Mobility 2015, organised by Messe Frankfurt Middle East in partnership with the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA), and supported by the Automobile & Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE), will take place from 8-9 November at the Meydan Hotel.

The two-day conference, held under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Rashid Ahmad bin Fahad, UAE Minister of Environment and Water and Chairman of ESMA, will present a unique platform for regulators, government authorities, key industry players and thought leaders to discuss the future opportunities, advances and innovations in electric and hybrid vehicles.

H.E. Abdulla Abdulqader Al Maeeni, the Director General of ESMA, the UAE government’s standardisation body, said ESMA’s official support comes after identifying the growing need to encourage the use of electric and hybrid vehicles in support of the Dubai Smart City Initiative and the UAE Vision 2021.

“Electric vehicles have come a long way and are now technically advanced to effectively compete with their conventional counterparts,” said Al Maeeni.  “With the infrastructure and support system now shaping up, UAE Nationals and residents can seriously consider owning electric vehicles.

“Through encouraging the use of electric vehicles in the UAE, ESMA supports the Smart City Initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as well as the goals of the UAE Vision 2021. These initiatives aim to make Dubai a smart, integrated and connected city, sustainable with its resources and where environmental components are clean, healthy and sustainable,” Al Maeeni added.

Coinciding with the two-day International Conference on Future Mobility will be an exhibition showcasing the latest innovations in the field of electric vehicles and their supporting technology.

Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Messe Frankfurt Middle East, said: “Recent developments in electric vehicle technology, including improvements to the driving range of the vehicles, faster charging, and the ability of key components such as batteries to withstand extreme heat, has created enormous potential to significantly increase the use of electric vehicles in the UAE.”

“The International Conference on Future Mobility 2015 will draw attention to immense potential that exists for electric vehicle technology in the Middle East, attracting experts and delegates from the wider region and across the world.”

Electric cars require their own eco-system to operate at optimum capacity and plans are already in place in the UAE to achieve this. Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has already announced the roll out of 100 charging stations by the end of this year.

Al Maeeni also added that ESMA is actively working towards drafting a federal law governing electric vehicles in the UAE, where it aims to strike the right balance between the expectations of the government, manufacturers, and ultimately the consumers.

The International Conference on Future Mobility 2015 will feature more than 200 delegates including government officials, key decision-makers and international experts in the manufacturing and trading sectors, as well as authorities responsible for developing standards and specifications of electric and hybrid vehicles.

Following the inauguration by HE Dr. Rashid Ahmad bin Fahad, the conference proper will begin with keynote addresses by Al Maeeni and Dr. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the ATCUAE.

الإمارات تسلط الضوء على أحدث الإبداعات العالمية في تقنيات السيارات الكهربائية والهجين

توقعات بمشاركة أكثر من 200 خبير في النسخة الأولى من المؤتمر الدولي عن مستقبل النقل 2015 في دبي

دبي، الإمارات: تستضيف دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة الدورة الأولى من المؤتمر الدولي عن إبداعات السيارات الكهربائية والهجين في نوفمبر 2015 في دبي والذي يسلط الضوء على أحدث التطورات العالمية في تقنيات السيارات الكهربائية.

يقام المؤتمر الدولي عن "مستقبل النقل 2015" الذي تنظمه ميسي فرانكفورت الشرق الأوسط بالاشتراك مع هيئة الإمارات للمواصفات والمقاييس (مواصفات) وبدعم نادي الإمارات للسيارات، يقام يومي 8 – 9 نوفمبر في فندق ميدان.

يعد مؤتمر اليومين الذي يقام تحت رعاية معالي دكتور راشد أحمد بن فهد وزير البيئة والمياه ورئيس مجلس إدارة هيئة الإمارات للمواصفات والمقاييس، يعد منصة فريدة للجهات التنظيمية، الهيئات الحكومية، كبار لاعبي الصناعة والمفكرين لمناقشة الفرص المستقبلية والتطورات والإبداعات في قطاع السيارات الكهربائية والهجين.

وصرح سعادة عبد الله عبد القادر المعيني، المدير العام في مواصفات، هيئة المواصفات في حكومة الإمارات، صرح بأن الدعم الرسمي من مواصفات يأتي استجابة للحاجة المتنامية إلى التشجيع على استخدام السيارات الكهربائية والهجين دعما لمبادرة مدينة دبي الذكية ورؤية الإمارات 2021.

وقال المعيني: "قطعت السيارات الكهربائية شوطا طويلا من التطور وأصبحنا الآن متطورين من الناحية الفنية للتنافس بفعالية مع أقرانها التقليدية. وفي ضوء البنية التحتية ونظام الدعم الذي يتشكل الآن بات بإمكان مواطني دولة الإمارات والمقيمين فيها التفكير جديا في امتلاك سيارات كهربائية".

وأضاف المعيني: "من خلال التشجيع على استخدام السيارات الكهربائية في الإمارات تدعم مواصفات مبادرة المدينة الذكية التي أطلقها سمو الشيخ محمد بن راشد آل مكتوم، نائب رئيس الدولة، وحاكم دبي، إضافة إلى أهداف رؤية الإمارات 2021. تهدف هذه المبادرات إلى جعل دبي مدينة ذكية، متكاملة ومتصلة، مستدامة بمواردها تتمتع بمكونات بيئة نظيفة، صحية ومستدامة".

وبالتزامن مع المؤتمر الدولي عن مستقبل النقل 2015 يقام معرض يقدم أحدث الإبداعات في مجال السيارات الكهربائية وتقنياتها الداعمة.

وأوضح أحمد باولس الرئيس التنفيذي في ميسي فرانكفورت الشرق الأوسط قائلا: "لقد أدت التطورات الحديثة في تقنيات السيارات الكهربائية بما في ذلك تحسينات نطاق القيادة للمركبات، الشحن الأسرع وقدرة المكونات الرئيسية مثل البطاريات على مقاومة الحرارة البالغة، أدت إلى توفير فرص هائلة لزيادة استخدام السيارات الكهربائية بشكل ملحوظ في الإمارات".

وتابع: "سوف يجذب المؤتمر الدولي عن مستقبل النقل 2015 الاهتمام للفرص الهائلة التي تزخر بها تقنيات السيارات الكهربائية في الشرق الأوسط حيث يستقطب المؤتمر الخبراء والمشاركين من المنطقة والعالم".

تتطلب السيارات الكهربائية نظامها البيئي الخاص للعمل بكفاءة عالية وقد تم وضع الخطط بالفعل في الإمارات لتحقيق ذلك. وقد أعلنت هيئة الكهرباء والمياه في دبي  (ديوا) بالفعل عن تجهيز 100 محطة شحن بنهاية هذا العام.

وأضاف المعيني أن مواصفات تعمل بجد نحو صياغة قانون اتحادي يحكم السيارات الكهربائية في الإمارات، حيث تهدف إلى تحقيق التوازن المطلوب بين توقعات الحكومة، المصنعين والمستهلكين في النهاية.

يشارك في المؤتمر أكثر من 200 فرد من مسؤولين حكوميين، كبار صانعي القرار وخبراء دوليين في قطاعي التصنيع والتجارة، إلى جانب الهيئات المسؤولة عن تطوير معايير ومحددات السيارات الكهربائية والهجين.

وعقب افتتاح معالي دكتور راشد أحمد بن فهد للمؤتمر ستكون هناك كلمة افتتاحية للمعيني ودكتور محمد بن سليم، رئيس نادي الإمارات للسيارات.

Green Development Council organizes capacity building for introducing national eco-labeling and green procurement schemes

United Arab Emirates, September 28, 2015 – The Emirates Green Development Council (EGDC) organized a Capacity Building Workshop on Eco-labeling and Green Public Procurement on 28 and 29 September 2015, at the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi. The two-day program gathered around 30 key policy makers from diverse ministries and authorities which are related to the formulation and implementation of eco-labelling and green public procurement policies at the federal level.

EGDC was formed in June 2015 to coordinate and oversee the implementation of the UAE Green Agenda 2015-2030, which was approved by the Cabinet in January 2015, and to ensure an effective collaboration between federal and local authorities as well as stakeholders. Under the Council, a committee for each of the five strategic objectives was established in September 2015, which will formulate and implement concrete activities. Among five committees, the National Committee on Sustainable Environment and Valued Natural Resources, which is coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Water, identified eco-labeling and green public procurement as one of the first implementation priorities.

The capacity building sessions were led by experts from the European Office of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), the Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (CSCP) based in Germany, and Agrofuturo based in Italy. With a facilitation support from GGGI and the Emirates Wildlife Society (EWS-WWF), the participants learned the benefits and steps to introduce eco-labeling and green public procurement policies and global best practices. Based on this learning, they also discussed how best those policies can be applied and the existing practices can be advanced in the UAE context, and identify each authority’s role and next steps of collaboration.

“One of our committee’s key objectives is to support economic diversification and job creation in the country by facilitating market and consumer demand for environmental products and services. Eco-labeling is considered to be the most effective way to shift the everyday purchasing decisions of consumers. As the largest consumer, which accounts for 24 per cent of GDP, the federal and local governments’ purchase can drive markets towards the green economy,” said Eng. Mariam Mohammed Saeed Hareb, Assistant Undersecretary of Natural Resources, Ministry of Environment and Water, who is also chairing the Committee on Sustainable Environment and Valued Natural Resources, welcoming the participating policy makers.

“Capacity building and learning from best practices is an important first step and a key to success for any policy-making. There are already a number of advancements in these ‘low-hanging fruit’ areas, including efficiency standards and labeling for electrical appliances and water fixtures established by the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA). This workshop helped identifying the best way forward for the UAE to realize the green economy and encourage more cooperation among competent authorities,” she concluded.

مجلس الإمارات للتنمية الخضراء ينظم ورشة عمل في مجال العلامات الإيكولوجية الإماراتية وبرامج المشتريات الخضراء

الإمارات، 28 سبتمبر، 2015 - نظم مجلس الإمارات للتنمية الخضراء  بالتعاون مع المعهد العالمي للنمو الاخضر ورشة عمل في بناء القدرات الوطنية في مجال العلامات الإيكولوجية وبرامج المشتريات الخضراء وذلك يومي 28 و29 سبتمبر 2015 في مكتب الإقليمي  للمعهد  العالمي للنمو الأخضر في مدينة مصدر بإمارة ابوظبي . وشارك في الورشة ما يقارب 50 شخصية من صنّاع القرار من مختلف الوزارات والجهات المعنية ذات الصلة بوضع  وتنفيذ سياسات المشتريات الخضراء  والعلامة الإيكولوجية على المستوى الوطني.

وقد تمّ تشكيل مجلس الإمارات للتنمية الخضراء في شهر يونيو 2015 بهدف التنسيق والإشراف على تنفيذ الأجندة الخضراء 2015-2030 التي تمّ اعتمادها من مجلس الوزراء الموقر في شهر كانون يناير 2015 في إطار التعاون الفعّال بين الحكومة الاتحادية والجهات المعنية. وفي سبتمبر 2015، تم تشكيل لجنة لكل هدف من الأهداف الاستراتيجية الخمسة للمجلس، والتي سيتم من خلالها وضع وتنفيذ سلسلة من البرامج والمبادرات الخضراء للتحول نحو اقتصاد اكثر اخضراراً. وتعنی"اللجنة الوطنية للاستدامة البيئية"، إحدى اللجان الخمسة  المنبثقة  من مجلس الإمارات للتنمية الخضراء   والمشرف عليها وزارة البيئة و المياه، بتنفيذ برامج قي مجال العلامات الايكلوجية و المشتريات الخضراء والتي تأتي في مقدمة اولويات العمل حيث ياتي التعريف بالعلامة الإيكولوجية وبرنامج المشتريات الخضراء في مقدمة أولويات التنفيذ.

حيث ساهمت وزارة الخارجية بالتعاون مع العديد من الخبراء من المكتب الأوروبي التابع للمجلس الدولي للمبادرات البيئية المحلية في ادارة الفعالية،  ومن مركز الاستهلاك والإنتاج المستدامين  في المانيا، ومن أغروفوتورو في ايطاليا. وقام المعهد العالمي للنمو الأخضر وجمعية الإمارات للحياة الفطرية خلال الورشة بعرض أفضل الممارسات العالمية في مجال السياسات وبرامج المشتريات الخضراء والعلامة الإيكولوجية. كما تمّت أيضاً مناقشة كيفية تنفيذ هذه السياسات وتطوير السياسات القائمة وفق أفضل الممارسات العالمية، بالإضافة الى تحديد دور السلطات المحلية المعنية وتفعيل دور القطاع الخاص وذلك لتعزيز  خطوات التعاون القادمة.

ورحبّت سعادة المهندسة مريم محمد سعيد حارب، وكيل وزارة البيئة والمياه المساعد لقطاع الموارد المائية والمحافظة على الطبيعة بالوكالة ورئيس اللجنة الوطنية للاستدامة البيئية، بالمشاركين قائلةً بأن الهدف الرئيسي للّجنة هو دعم التنوع الاقتصادي وخلق فرص عمل جديدة في الدولة، وذلك من خلال تسهيل حركة الأسواق وإدارة الطلب على المنتجات والخدمات البيئية. وأضافت أن وضع العلامات الإيكولوجية على المنتجات يعتبر عامل فعال لتحويل قرارات الشراء اليومية للمستهلكين. وكما  يمثل نسبة المشتريات الحكومية العامة  24%  من الناتج المحلي الإجمالي مما سيدفع الأسواق إلى التحول بشكل أسرع نحو الاقتصاد الاخضر. وأشارت إلى أن ورشة العمل تعمل على تحديد أفضل السبل في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة لتحقيق الاقتصاد الأخضر وتشجيع المزيد من التعاون بين الجهات المختصة.

وكما اضاف المهندس عيسی الهاشمي، مدير ادارة التنمية الخضراء والرئيس التنفيذي للابتكار الي ان بناء القدرات والتعرف على أفضل الممارسات هي الخطوة الأولى والرئيسية للنجاح في وضع السياسات، حيث شهدت في الفترة الاخيرة تحقيق عدد من الإنجازات في هذا المجال، بما في ذلك معايير الكفاءة والعلامات المخصصة للأجهزة الكهربائية والتجهيزات المائية التي وضعتها هيئة الإمارات للمواصفات والمقاييس.

 

NOCC looks to proven Optimarin BWT technology for PCTC newbuildings

September 28, 2015, Norway: Ballast water treatment (BWT) specialist Optimarin has been chosen by Norwegian Car Carriers AS (NOCC) as the supplier of choice for its two newbuild vessels currently under construction at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in South Korea. Optimarin will provide 667m³/h capacity systems for the state-of-the-art 6500 car capacity Pure Car Truck Carrier (PCTC) sister ships, which are scheduled for delivery in late 2016 and early 2017.

Optimarin CEO Tore Andersen says his firm’s established track record, in what is still a young industry, played a key role in securing this latest contract.

“We’ve been exclusively focused on producing simple, reliable and flexible BWT solutions since our formation in 1994,” Andersen comments. “We’re now in a position where we’ve sold over 350 of our Optimarin Ballast Systems (OBS) worldwide and installed over 270.

“NOCC was drawn to this expertise, as it was to the fact that our systems have a small footprint – with their modular nature making them simple to install – and a proven track record of operational success from vessels around the world. With the ratification of the IMO’s Ballast Water Management (BWM) convention expected imminently, shipowners, and the yards that provide them with high quality service, need that peace of mind.”

NOCC’s high specification PCTC’s will be amongst the most advanced vessels in their segment, with heavy capacity ramps (150 tons) and flexible cargo solutions whereby four of their 12 decks will be hoistable, enabling them to carry a wide range of high and heavy items. In addition, some decks will feature special safety zones, allowing the DNV GL classed ships to transport vehicles with new energy solutions, such as pressurized hydrogen and natural gas in their tanks.

“These company and industry flagships will lead the way in their segment, so its appropriate they have the best solutions onboard, and that includes for BWT,” Andersen stresses. “Our technology is simple, with few moving parts, but hugely effective, utilising a combination of back-flushing filters and UV irradiation to destroy the harmful organisms that can stow away in ballast.

“It’s the market leading solution for ships up to 60,000 dwt and we’re delighted that NOCC is cementing that position with these two new orders.”

The news caps a strong month for the Stavanger, Norway based firm, which just last week confirmed a retrofit order for 11 systems for an unnamed Asian shipowner in the container segment.

“Our technology is equally as suited to the needs of yards and newbuilds as it is to the challenges of retrofitting into existing vessels,” concludes Andersen. “This flexibility positions us well to meet the needs of an industry that now needs to confront the threat posed by untreated ballast head on. We look forward to helping it do that in a safe, reliable, efficient and environmentally friendly manner.”

Optimarin’s OBS solution is IMO approved, has USCG AMS acceptance and is currently undergoing a full programme of USCG approval testing. The system is certified through DNV GL, BV, RMRS and CCS.

The demand for steel will grow to as much as two billion metric tons a year by 2025. Since the turn of the decade, infrastructure and construction projects linked to urbanization in India, the Middle East, China and elsewhere, has accounted for more than 35 percent of global steel demand and for more than half its growth.

Fitting then, that as relations between Iran and the west continue to improve, more than 350 international delegates from companies both inside and outside Iran met on Kish Island recently at the first Iranian Iron and Steel conference, discussing opportunities to integrate the nation’s huge iron and steel industry into growing global markets.
