DP WORLD KICKS OFF CASHEW BOOM WITH RECORD EXPORTS FROM SENEGAL

Mega-shipment of 2,000 tonnes of cashews arrived from Guinea Bissau at DP World’s Dakar terminal.

Some 180,000 tonnes of cashews were exported from Dakar in 2023, primarily to India and Vietnam.

Dakar, Senegal, 16 July 2024: DP World has marked the official start of Senegal’s cashew export season, welcoming the MV Diogue, a mega-shipment carrying 2,000 tonnes of cashews from neighbouring Guinea-Bissau.

West Africa is becoming one of the world’s leading exporters of cashew nuts, and, in Senegal, the nut sector is flourishing due to the country’s role as a key gateway for exports of this precious agricultural commodity. The cashew export season in the West African country started on 5th July.

Last year, some 180,000 tonnes of cashew nuts from Senegal and Guinea Bissau passed through the DP World Dakar terminal for international export, with the team helping local producers and exporters find international outlets for their products, thereby contributing to local development and prosperity. India and Vietnam were the primary destinations.

“The agricultural sector in Senegal and Guinea Bissau represents a significant proportion of economic activity in both countries, which need a stable supply chain that facilitates innovative, flexible and cost-effective solutions,” said Clarence Rodrigues, CEO of DP World Dakar.

As part of its commitment to supporting the cashew export season, DP World works with cashew traders by liaising with shipping lines, monitoring the cargo from its point of departure until it is loaded onto the regular lines, and handling the packaging, stuffing, and weighing operations for transport to its intended destination.

In recent years, DP World Dakar has collaborated with various shipping lines at the container terminal to ensure efficient and seamless export of cashews from Senegal and Guinea Bissau to countries across the world, including key markets in Asia.

“Through faster administrative processes and new storage solutions – such as loading cargo directly at the terminal – we are saving customers time and money. We enable cashew producers in Senegal and Guinea Bissau to have access to international markets,” said Rodrigues.

Over the past 16 years, DP World has invested over $300 million in modernising the Port of Dakar, transforming it from a facility that handled 265,000 TEUs annually in 2008 to a state-of-the-art terminal that handled 800,000 TEUs in total 2023 – positively impacting trade, economic expansion, and job creation.

DP World has significantly improved the availability of goods for communities across Senegal and beyond, reinforcing the Port of Dakar's status as one of the most efficient terminals in West Africa and a leading example of operational excellence on the African continent.

DP World is also investing US$1 billion in the ongoing construction of the Port of Ndayane (50km from Dakar), which will further enhance Senegal's trade position. This is the largest single private sector investment in the country’s history.

Business interruption is the top risk for the oil and gas sector in 2024, Allianz Risk Barometer reveals

  • Business interruption is the top risk in the oil and gas sector with 45% of responses.
  • The energy crisis is second with 34% of responses.
  • Climate change is third with 32% of responses.
  • Business continuity planning reviews are essential and must be regularly updated.

Johannesburg, July 16, 2024 – Business interruption is the primary concern for the oil and gas sector in 2024, according to the Allianz Risk Barometer. It is followed by Energy crisis (34%), Climate change (32%)Fire, explosion (26%) and Natural catastrophes (23%). The report, based on insights from over 3,000 risk management professionals and business leaders, highlights the growing importance of addressing these risks to ensure business continuity and safeguard against potential disruptions.

Business interruption: top risk in the oil and gas

Business interruption remains a top risk in the oil and gas sector due to various factors such as supply chain disruptions, geopolitical instability, and fluctuations in oil prices. Mitigation strategies should prioritize implementing robust contingency plans, diversifying operations across multiple geographic regions, and investing in technology for real-time monitoring of production facilities and pipelines to detect and respond to potential disruptions promptly.

Risk management and resilience essential

Establishing strong relationships with suppliers and partners, maintaining adequate inventory levels, and developing alternative transportation routes can help mitigate the impact of interruptions. According to reports[1] proactive risk management and resilience-building measures are essential for oil and gas companies to mitigate business interruption risks and maintain operational stability in a volatile environment.

Energy crisis risks retain second spot

Energy crisis risks retain the second spot stemming from factors such as supply chain disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and regulatory changes impacting production and distribution. Mitigation strategies should prioritize diversifying energy sources and investing in renewable energy technologies to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and enhance resilience to energy shortages.

Collaboration is crucial

Implementing energy efficiency measures in operations and adopting advanced technologies for extraction and refining processes can optimize resource utilization and mitigate the impact of energy crises. Collaboration with governments, industry stakeholders, and research institutions to develop sustainable energy policies and strategies is crucial. Proactive measures to enhance energy efficiency and diversify energy sources are essential for oil and gas companies to mitigate energy crisis risks and ensure long-term sustainability in a rapidly evolving energy landscape, according to reports.

Prioritize reducing emissions

Climate change risks have increased from #4 to #3 due to its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and vulnerability to the physical impacts of climate change such as extreme weather events and sea-level rise. Mitigation strategies should prioritize reducing emissions through investments in carbon capture and storage technologies, transitioning towards cleaner energy sources such as natural gas and renewables, and implementing methane reduction initiatives in extraction and production processes.

Address climate change risks

Enhancing resilience to climate-related impacts through infrastructure upgrades, risk assessments, and adaptation measures is crucial. Collaboration with governments, stakeholders, and communities to develop sustainable energy policies and transition strategies is essential. Research suggests that proactive measures to address climate change risks are imperative for the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the oil and gas industry in a transitioning energy landscape.

Invest in advanced technologies

Fire and explosion risks rank fourth due to the volatile nature of hydrocarbons and the complex infrastructure involved in exploration, production, and transportation. Mitigation strategies should prioritize implementing robust safety protocols, including regular equipment inspections, hazard assessments, and employee training on emergency response procedures. Investing in advanced technologies for early detection of potential hazards, such as infrared cameras and gas detection systems, can enable swift intervention and containment of incidents.

Safety of workers and communities

Establishing strict regulations and standards for the construction and operation of facilities and pipelines, as well as maintaining adequate emergency response capabilities, is crucial. Studies recommend that proactive risk management and adherence to stringent safety measures are essential for oil and gas companies to mitigate the risk of fire and explosion incidents and ensure the safety of workers and surrounding communities.

Thorough risk assessments

Natural catastrophes ranked fifth as new entrant in the oil and gas industry due to risks such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis, which can disrupt operations, damage infrastructure, and pose environmental threats. Mitigation strategies should include conducting thorough risk assessments to identify vulnerable assets and implementing measures to enhance resilience, such as reinforcing infrastructure, relocating critical facilities away from high-risk areas, and investing in advanced monitoring and early warning systems.

Swift and effective response to natural disasters

Establishing robust emergency response plans and coordination mechanisms with local authorities and responders can enable swift and effective response to natural disasters. Collaboration with industry peers and stakeholders to share best practices and lessons learned can also enhance preparedness and response capabilities. Proactive risk management and comprehensive disaster preparedness are essential for the oil and gas industry to mitigate the impact of natural catastrophes and ensure the safety of personnel and assets, according to research[2].

Risk mitigation: how to future-proof your operations

What these risks reveal is the extent to which risks are interrelated and aggregated in the networked world we live and work in. Faced with loss scenarios that can fall like dominoes, businesses need robust, resilient operational processes to safeguard their supply chains and ensure business continuity. Business continuity planning (BCP) reviews are essential and must be regularly updated.

Building on AUC’s century of expertise in lifelong education through the School of Continuing Education, this facility will integrate executive education from the Schools of Business, Global Affairs and Public Policy and Sciences and Engineering. It will significantly expand AUC’s outreach efforts and amplify its endeavors to prepare Egypt and the region’s workforce for the future of work.

The Technology, Research, and Innovation Lab (TRI-Lab) is set to become Egypt’s first university-led innovation hub. It will support academic excellence and foster interdisciplinary research and innovation in crucial fields like energy studies, sustainability and the environment. Moreover, it will tackle real-world challenges by bringing together scholars, scientists, and industry experts, effectively bridging the gap between classroom learning and practical application.

Understanding the value of a supportive living environment, Campus-2026 will also unveil new residential facilities for students to live and learn on campus. These modern residences are designed to cultivate a sense of community and academic excellence, featuring sustainable design elements and communal spaces. The new housing will provide a nurturing environment where students and faculty can thrive, collaborate, and build lasting connections. It will also allow students from Egypt and the region to have a residential, independent experience without having to travel abroad.

“It has been special for me to return to AUC after more than a decade,” said Víctor Legorreta, partner and managing director at LEGORRETA®, the firm behind AUC’s iconic New Cairo campus center and student residences and who is commissioned to build the TRI Lab. "AUC consistently looks to the future while honoring its rich heritage, a balance reflected in its architecture. The primary objective behind the creation of the new TRI Lab is to establish a world-class facility that integrates cutting-edge technologies while respecting Egypt’s remarkable history and traditions."

Stu Rothenberger, senior principal and global higher education leader, DLR Group, who is commissioned to design the Extended Education Hub and the Next Generation Student Living and Learning Spaces explains that the projects will not only redefine the educational landscape in the region but also contribute to AUC’s inspiring legacy of advancing higher education worldwide. “We are honored to have partnered with The American University in Cairo to achieve its visionary approach.”

Since the early development stages of AUC New Cairo campus, the University has foreseen the need for additional projects to align with future educational and market demands. The relocation of AUC’s campus from Tahrir Square to New Cairo in 2008 was a significant milestone in the University’s history, signifying a bold leap into the future through creating a city of learning that is now the state-of-the-art New Cairo campus. Today, once again, AUC is preparing a revitalized vision for the future of AUC New Cairo, preparing AUC students to become global leaders, addressing the pressing challenges of our time and serving Egypt and the region.

“This project will enhance our educational offerings of providing excellence in education and research capabilities while fostering a vibrant, inclusive environment where ideas and cultures converge,” Dallal said. “Campus-2026 embodies our vision for the future of higher education in Egypt, preparing our students to become global leaders and addressing the critical challenges of our time. Together, we will create a brighter, more sustainable future for Egypt and the world."
