7% year-on- year increase in the number of pupils participating
- Major international study also revealed the most popular authors among Egypt students
Egypt – 27 June 2024: The annual ‘What Kids Are Reading Report’, a study of over 3,800 pupils across Egypt and over 1.2 million globally from leading edtech provider, Renaissance, shows a significant increase in the Average Book Difficulty (or ATOS Book Level) of the books read by pupils, which, at 3.7, is now on a par with the UK’s average of 3.6.
The Average Percent Correct (or APC) when pupils were quizzed on the books they had read, however, declined a little to 0.79, but is still a little above the UK average and is in line with the level of comprehension pupils need to progress their reading skills and attainment.
The What Kids Are Reading report also reveals pupils’ attitudes towards popular authors and books, with pupils in Egypt showing a big change in pattern of choice. Top authors in Egypt included Dav Pilkey, with nine books including eight of the top nine. The most popular titles were Dog Man: Fetch-22, Dog Man: Lord of the Fleas, as well as Dog Man and Cat Kid, to name a few. Roald Dahl had four books - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda (English), The Magic Finger and George's Marvellous Medicine. Of high readability in the list was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J. K. Rowling.
The research also confirms the link between more reading time in school with higher reading attainment. When considering Engaged Reading Time (ERT) and Cumulative Number of Words Read, we see further evidence of the impact of the time spent reading – the more time is allocated to reading, the greater the number of words read, with the biggest gains occurring when ERT exceeds 30 minutes per day.
The What Kids Are Reading Report was written using Renaissance data analysed by Professor Keith Topping from the University of Dundee. Commenting on the overall report:
“The key takeaway from this report is that more reading practice at an appropriate level of difficulty improves pupils’ reading performance. This has a knock-on impact on academic performance across the board. Focusing on comprehension and finding books they genuinely love will benefit pupils within and beyond the classroom. Schools and parents can support students by encouraging them to read often and consume more challenging books.”
Crispin Chatterton, former teacher and Director of Education at Renaissance, commented:
“The What Kids Are Reading report identifies which books and authors are most engaging pupils. This is vital information for teachers to ensure pupils are reading books they really enjoy. When reading for pleasure, pupils are more likely to pay close attention to the content and it encourages a love of reading which stretches beyond their school years. Digital tools such as Accelerated Reader and myON can also help teachers to identify and support weak and reluctant readers.”

التقرير يكشف عن قائمة الكتّاب المفضلين لدى طلبة المدارس في مصر
مصر، 27 يونيو 2024: كشفت رينيسانس، الشركة الرائدة عالمياً في تقديم حلول تكنولوجيا التعليم، عن نتائج التقرير السنوي ’ ماذا يقرأ الأطفال‘، الذي شمل أكثر من 3800 طالباً في مصر وأكثر من 1.2 مليون طالباً حول العالم. وأشار التقرير إلى وجود زيادة كبيرة في متوسط صعوبة الكتب التي يقرأها الطلبة بمعدل 3.7، على نحو شبيه بالمتوسط المسجل في المملكة المتحدة البالغ 3.6.
ويشير التقرير إلى انخفاض متوسط الإجابات الصحيحة إلى 0.79 وذلك عند اختبار الطلبة حول الكتب التي قرأوها، ومع ذلك، لا تزال هذه النسبة أعلى قليلاً من المتوسط المسجل في المملكة المتحدة، ويتماشى مع مستويات الفهم الموصى بها والتي يمكن للطلبة أن يحققوا فيها أكبر قدر من التحصيل القرائي.
ويسلط التقرير الضوء أيضاً على قائمة تضم أكثر المؤلفين والكتب قراءة من قبل الطلبة في مصر، حيث أظهر الطلبة تغيراً كبيراً في نمط الاختيار. وتصدر القائمة المؤلف داف بيكلي مع تسعة كتب، ثمانية منها ضمن التسعة الأوائل. وكان من أبرز العناوين: "دوج مان: فيتش-22"، و"دوج مان: سيد البراغيث"، و"دوج مان والقط الصغير". وتضمنت القائمة أيضاً أربعة كتب للمؤلف رولد دال، والتي شملت "شارلي ومصنع الشوكولا"، و"ماتيلدا"، و"الإصبع السحري"، و"دواء جورج". ومن بين الكتب الأكثر سهولة للقراءة ضمن القائمة كان كتاب "هاري بوتر وحجر الفيلسوف" للكاتبة جوان كاثلين رولينغ.
ويؤكد التقرير أيضاً على العلاقة بين زيادة وقت القراءة في المدرسة وارتفاع مستوى التحصيل القرائي. وعند الأخذ بعين الاعتبار الوقت المستغرق في القراءة والعدد التراكمي للكلمات المقروءة، نلاحظ وجود دليلاً إضافياً يشير إلى مدى تأثير الوقت المستغرق في القراءة – كلما زاد الوقت المخصص للقراءة، زاد عدد الكلمات المقروءة، مع تحقيق نتائج أكبر عندما يتجاوز الوقت المستغرق في القراءة 30 دقيقة في اليوم.
وتمت كتابة تقرير ’ ماذا يقرأ الأطفال‘ باستخدام بيانات رينيسانس التي حللها الأستاذ الأكاديمي كيث توبينج من جامعة دندي، وقال تعليقاً على هذا الموضوع: "يسلط التقرير الضوء على أهمية المطالعة وضرورة قراءة كتب متفاوتة في درجة الصعوبة بهدف تحسين مهارة القراءة لدى الطلاب، والتأثير الإيجابي غير المباشر للمطالعة على الأداء الأكاديمي لهم في جميع المجالات. ويركز على فهم وإيجاد الكتب المحببة لدى الطلاب والتي يمكن الاستفادة منها خارج إطار التعليم الصفّي. كما يمكن أن تلعب المدارس وأولياء الطلاب دوراً داعماً يتمثل في تشجيع الطلاب على المطالعة واختيار كتب أكثر صعوبة".
ومن جانبه أضاف كريسبن تشاترتون، المدرّس السابق ومدير التعليم في رينيسانس:
"يسلط تقرير ’ ماذا يقرأ الأطفال‘ الضوء على أبرز المؤلفين والكتب التي يقرأها طلبة المدارس. وتعتبر هذه بيانات هامة للمعلمين التي يمكن أن يستخدموها للتأكد من أن الطلبة يطالعون الكتب التي يستمتعون بقراءتها. عندما تتحول القراءة إلى متعة، سيكون لدى الطلبة اهتماماً أكبر بالمحتوى، وهذا بدوره سيحفزهم على مواصلة ممارسة هواية المطالعة بعد التخرج. كما تتيح الأدوات الرقمية مثل برنامج Accelerated Reader ومكتبةmyON ، للمعلمين إمكانية تحديد مستويات الطلبة وتعزيز قدراتهم ودعمهم".
وبدوره، قال جيمس باركينسون، مساعد رئيس قسم التدريس والتعلم في مدرسة الالسن البريطانية الامريكية الدولية: "تمنح حلول رينيسانس طلابنا الاستقلالية في اختيار الكتب التي تناسب اهتماماتهم، وبالتالي تعزيز إقبالهم على ممارسة المطالعة. عندما يبدأ الطلبة بالتفاعل مع هذه الكتب، سيبدأون في قراءة المزيد، ومع مرور الوقت ستلاحظ الفرق في المفردات التي يستخدمونها وتطور مهاراتهم الكتابية، وهذا جانب جداً هام بالنسبة لنا. تعتبر القراءة أداة قوية للتعلم، خاصة للطلبة الذين غالباً يواجهون صعوبة في تطوير مهارات اللغة والقراءة والكتابة بلغتهم الأم. وإن الوصول إلى مجموعة واسعة من عناوين الكتب والاختبارات يحفز الطلبة على القراءة، والذي بدوره يعزز من قدرتهم على تطوير مهاراتهم في اللغة الإنجليزية مع تحسن أدائهم الأكاديمي في القراءة والكتابة. كما أن هذا التركيز على تطوير مهارات القراءة والكتابة ومواصلة المطالعة يدعم المتعلمين لدينا في اكتشاف كيفية القراءة والكتابة خلال مسيرة تعلمهم للغة الإنجليزية كلغة ثانية أو ثالثة".
