Targeted ransomware groups continue to cause havoc, despite global disruptions

Kaspersky experts have reported a significant rise in targeted ransomware activity at GISEC Global 2025, with the number of active ransomware groups increasing by 35% between 2023 and 2024 - reaching 81 groups globally. Despite this surge, the number of infected victims dropped by 8% during the same period, reaching an estimated 4,300 victims worldwide. The UAE, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye emerged as the most frequently targeted countries in the region.

According to Kaspersky research of data leak sites of targeted ransomware groups, the number of ransomware groups continued to rise for the second consecutive year, despite two major disruptions targeting LockBit and BlackCat in 2024 - indicating that such attacks remain highly lucrative for cybercriminals.

Targeted ransomware groups use techniques such as exploiting vulnerable internet-exposed services, social engineering, and leveraging traded initial access on the dark web to infiltrate victims. There is also growing evidence also suggests increased collaboration among these groups, including the exchange of malware and hacking tools to achieve their objectives. 

His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cybersecurity for the UAE Government, affirmed: "In light of the accelerating pace of cyberattacks globally, it has become imperative to adopt proactive policies that leverage artificial intelligence and advanced analytics to detect threats and respond to them effectively". He emphasized the importance of GISEC Global 2025 at this critical time and its role in bringing together cybersecurity experts, specialists, and leaders to showcase and discuss evolving threats. The event serves as a vital platform for enhancing collaboration and developing innovative, forward-looking solutions to ensure a secure cyber environment that supports sustainable development and the digital economy.

Maher Yamout, Lead Security Researcher for the Middle East, Turkiye and Africa at Kaspersky, suggest some plans to protect institutions. He said: “By identifying and securing your corporate network’s entry points and understanding the tactics used by ransomware groups, companies can better protect their digital assets against targeted ransomware attacks. Failing to address both aspects, significantly increases a company’s vulnerability.”

To help organizations strengthen their defenses, Kaspersky recommends the following:

• Employee education and cybersecurity training is necessary as human error is a common cause for cybersecurity breach and can serve as an initial point of access for ransomware attacks.

• The Kaspersky Threat Intelligence is an essential tool which provides in-depth  threat intelligence and real-time insights on the history, motivations and operations of targeted ransomware groups. In addition, Kaspersky’s Digital Footprint Intelligence monitors external threats for companies’ assets in Surface, Deep and Dark web, strengthening defense against credential leaks.

• Keep all devices and systems updated to prevent attackers from exploiting known vulnerabilities.

• Set up offline backups that intruders cannot misuse, and make sure you can access it quickly in an emergency.

• Kaspersky’s multi-layered, next generation protection detects ransomware at both the delivery stage and execution stage of the attack. Kaspersky Next , which combines exploit prevention, behavior-based detection, and a powerful remediation engine capable of rolling back malicious actions. It also features built-in self-defense mechanisms to prevent tampering or removal by attackers.

Governments propel cybersecurity conversations on multi-layered defense strategies at GISEC Global in Dubai

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 8th May 2025: Governments and their roles in adopting a multi-layered approach to cybersecurity was at the top of the agenda on the second day of GISEC Global 2025, the world’s third-largest cybersecurity event, and biggest in the MENA region.

 

Following a successful opening day on Tuesday, the Dubai World Trade Centre once again welcomed more than 25,000 visitors from over 160 countries including 450 global CISOs for day two of the mega event, held under the theme of ‘Securing an AI-Powered Future.’ 

 

With the Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2024 showing that governments are the third most-targeted sector globally by nation-state threat actors, GISEC Global saw the Global Cybersecurity Congress open with H.E. Dr Mohamed Al-Kuwaiti, Head of the UAE Cybersecurity Council, re-emphasising the need for a collective effort to strengthen the global industry and shape its future policies.

 

‘A collective effort is fundamental to defeat cyber criminals’

 

Addressing the audience in his opening speech, he stated: “Cyberattacks do not distinguish between governments, entities and people, they simply attack. That can cost a significant amount of money, or even impact national security. This is why we need to partner as we cannot do this ourselves and why partnership is the main pillar of resiliency.”

 

H.E. Dr Mohamed Al-Kuwaiti was also part of an insightful panel discussion, joining top officials from a diverse range of businesses in the industry to explore cutting-edge research, public-private partnerships and talent development to tackle evolving cyber threats.

 

The panel included Pei Ling Lee, Head of Cyber Strategy and Capabilities Development of Interpol. Responsible for driving Interpol’s cybercrime-fighting mandate and strategic objectives and priorities under its Global Cybercrime Programme, she believes it’s essential that more meaningful dialogue takes place to positively impact the industry around the world.

 

She said: “Of course, training is a very important part but, at Interpol, we also realise there is a need to promote better coordination between law enforcement and entities that are dealing with cybersecurity issues. Therefore, there is more importance on collaboration between international organisations so people can share their expertise with each other, which can be implemented at national levels.”

 

‘Waiting is no longer an option – we need to take the quantum leap now’

 

Afra Ibrahim Bin Fares, Senior Policy & Regulations Affairs Executive at Dubai Electronic Security Center (DESC), also delivered an insightful presentation that explored the steps being taken by the government entity in preparing for the quantum leap.

 

The cybersecurity researcher, who specialises in data security and zero-trust architecture and contributes to Dubai’s cyber resilience, highlighted DESC’s Quantum Cybersecurity Readiness Guidelines, a valuable document to help guide technology providers and entities under DESC’s law. It also provides a strategic framework for assessing and preparing quantum-safe security measures, while supporting the development of a transition roadmap to ensure resilience against emerging quantum computing threats.

 

As technology continues to rapidly advance, she warned that governments and technology providers cannot afford to wait any longer if they want to avoid situations that could have far-reaching consequences.

 

She said: “We are on the verge of a new technology revolution – the quantum revolution that will dramatically change our work. Dubai government is positioning itself as one of the pioneers in the Middle East for quantum guidelines and I want to emphasise that quantum is not on the horizon and it is closer than we think. Waiting is no longer an option and it’s time to act and prepare and take on the quantum leap now.”

 

Looking beyond the Middle East, Jin Young Oh, Vice President of Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), explained how the government entity is driving South Korea’s digital trust and internet safety across Asia’s most connected nation. 

 

He highlighted Generative AI, Supply Chain, Cloud Security, AI Cloud Security, Zero-Trust, Cyber Resilience, Proactive Security, Mobility Security, Spam and Phishing and Quantum as KISA’s top 10 cybersecurity issues that they are working on, while efforts are being made in both product development and field testing of prototypes to integrate AI.

 

Hosted by the UAE Cyber Security Council, and supported by DESC, the UAE Ministry of Interior and Dubai Police, GISEC Global 2025 will come to a close on Thursday. As well as more engaging panel discussions and debates that will shape the future of cybersecurity, the final of the GISEC North Star pitch competition will be held as top innovators present their groundbreaking solutions to a panel of industry leaders.

وقال سعادته في الكلمة الافتتاحية: لا تفرّق "الهجمات السيبرانية بين الحكومات أو المؤسسات أو الأفراد، بل تستهدف الجميع دون تمييز، وقد تكون تكلفتها باهظة، بل ربما تصل إلى تهديد الأمن الوطني. ولهذا لا بد من التعاون؛ لأن المواجهة الفردية غير كافية والشراكة هي حجر الأساس في بناء منظومة مرنة وقادرة على الصمود."

 

كما شارك الدكتور الكويتي في جلسة حوارية رفيعة المستوى جمعت نخبة من المسؤولين في مؤسسات دولية رائدة، ناقشوا خلالها أحدث الأبحاث، ونماذج الشراكات بين القطاعين العام والخاص، وسبل تطوير الكفاءات لمواجهة التهديدات السيبرانية المتطورة.

 

وكانت بي لينغ لي، رئيسة استراتيجية الأمن السيبراني وتطوير القدرات في الإنتربول والمسؤولة عن قيادة مهمة المنظمة الدولية لمكافحة الجرائم السيبرانية ضمن إطارها الاستراتيجي العالمي، ضمن المشاركين في الجلسة، حيث أكدت على ضرورة خلق حوارات أعمق وأكثر تأثيراً لتعزيز القطاع عالمياً، وقالت: "التدريب عنصر أساسي، لكنه لا يكفي وحده. نؤمن في الإنتربول بأهمية تنسيق الجهود بين أجهزة إنفاذ القانون والجهات العاملة في مجال الأمن السيبراني. كما بات التعاون بين المنظمات الدولية ضرورياً ليتيح تبادل الخبرات وتطبيقها على مستوى الدول بشكل فعّال."

كما قدّمت عفراء إبراهيم بن فارس، المدير التنفيذي لشؤون السياسات واللوائح التنظيمية في مركز دبي للأمن الإلكتروني (DESC) عرضاً متميزاً سلطت فيه الضوء على استعدادات المركز لتحقيق القفزة الكمية القادمة.

 

واستعرضت الباحثة المتخصصة في أبحاث أمن البيانات وهندسة الثقة الصفرية والمساهمة في تعزيز مرونة البنية التحتية السيبرانية لإمارة دبي، دليل الاستعداد للأمن السيبراني الكمومي الذي أصدره المركز، والذي يُعد إطاراً استراتيجياً لتقييم وتطبيق آليات حماية متقدمة في مواجهة تهديدات الحوسبة الكمية المتسارعة، إلى جانب خارطة طريق للانتقال نحو بيئة آمنة.

 

وقالت: "إننا على أعتاب ثورة تكنولوجية جديدة ستغير طريقة عملنا كلياً، وتستعد حكومة دبي لتكون في طليعة حكومات الشرق الأوسط من خلال إصدار إرشادات واضحة للمرحلة الكمية. وأود أن أؤكد أن المستقبل الكمي لم يعد بعيداً – بل هو أقرب مما نتوقع. لذا، لم يعد الانتظار خياراً وحان وقت التحرك الفعلي."

 

 

ومن خارج الشرق الأوسط، استعرض جين يونغ أوه، نائب رئيس وكالة الإنترنت والأمن الكوري (KISA) جهود الحكومة الكورية في ترسيخ الثقة الرقمية وتعزيز أمن الإنترنت في أكثر دول آسيا المترابطة إلكترونياً.

 

حيث سلط الضوء على أبرز عشرة ملفات سيبرانية تتصدر أجندة الوكالة، وهي: الذكاء الاصطناعي التوليدي وسلاسل الإمداد والأمن السحابي وأمن سحابة الذكاء الاصطناعي وهندسة الثقة الصفرية والصمود السيبراني والأمن الاستباقي وأمن التنقل والرسائل الاحتيالية وسرقة الهوية وأمن الحوسبة الكمية. وأوضح أن هناك جهوداً كبيرة في تطوير المنتجات واختبار النماذج الأولية لدمج الذكاء الاصطناعي في هذه المجالات.

 

يختتم "جيسيك جلوبال 2025" فعالياته اليوم الخميس، والذي يُعقد بتنظيم من مجلس الأمن السيبراني لحكومة دولة الإمارات، وبدعم من مركز دبي للأمن الإلكتروني ووزارة الداخلية وشرطة دبي، ويشهد اليوم الختامي المزيد من النقاشات والجلسات التفاعلية حول مستقبل الأمن السيبراني، إلى جانب المرحلة النهائية من مسابقة "جيسيك نورث ستار" للابتكار التي يعرض فيها أبرز المبتكرين العالميين حلولهم أمام لجنة من كبار قادة الصناعة.

Unveils Prisma Access Browser 2.0, the world’s only SASE-native secure browser, perfect for the perimeterless, cloud-first world

بالو ألتو نتوركس تكشف عن متصفّح الإنترنت الأكثر أماناً في العالم

 

• 85% من إجراءات العمل في الوقت الحالي تتمّ عبر متصفحات الإنترنت
• 44% من الحوادث الأمنية والأنشطة التخريبية تم إطلاقها أو دعمها من خلال متصفحات الإنترنت الخاصة بالموظفين

 

دبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة، 7 مايو 2025: كشفت بالو ألتو نتوركس (المدرجة في بورصة ناسداك تحت الرمز: PANW)، الشركة الرائدة عالمياً في مجال الأمن الإلكتروني، عن متصفّح الإنترنت الأكثر أماناً في العالم (Prisma Access Browser 2.0)، والذي يعدّ المتصفح الوحيد الذي يعمل على منصة (SASE). وقد أضافت بالو ألتو نتوركس متصفّح الإنترنت الجديد وحلول منع فقدان البيانات على نقاط النهاية (DLP) إلى القدرات الجديدة لحلول Prisma SASE الذي توفره الشركة والذي يهدف لضمان الأمن في عصر الذكاء الاصطناعي التوليدي، والارتقاء بتجربة المستخدم، وتحسين المرونة التشغيلية في أماكن العمل العصرية.

ويوفر الجمع بين حل Prisma SASE ومتصفح الإنترنت الجديد إمكانية الوصول الآمن والقائم على السياسات المطبقة، إلى كل ما تحتاجه القوى العاملة العصرية، ودون التأثير سلباً على التجربة أو الأمن. ومن أجل تمكين المؤسسات من التصفح الآمن من أي جهاز أو موقع، ويشتمل متصفح الإنترنت الجديد على القدرات الجديدة التالية:

• الدفاع ضد هجمات الويب الجديدة والمتطورة: يقدم المتصفح الجديد مستويات حماية جديدة معززة بحل Precision AI^® من أجل الكشف الآني عن هجمات المراوغة والموجهة مثل التمويه المعزز بالذكاء الاصطناعي، وهجمات التصيّد الإلكتروني المستضافة عبر البرمجيات المقدمة كخدمة (SaaS)، والتي تشمل هجمات الرموز المراوغة التي يُنتجها الذكاء الاصطناعي، وعمليات الحقن الخبيثة في المواقع الإلكترونية المُخترقة، والتي لا يمكن اكتشافها بشكل موثوق خارج المتصفح.
• تقديم تجربة مستخدم جديدة: يوفر المتصفح الجديد أعلى أداء ممكن للتطبيقات الحديثة للويب والبرمجيات المقدمة كخدمة (SaaS)، كما يقوم في ذات الوقت بتزويد المستخدمين بالقدرة على تشغيل بنى تحتية قديمة بسهولة مثل تطبيقات سطح المكتب الافتراضي (VDI) من نفس المتصفح وذلك من أجل تقديم تجربة موحّدة.
