Ghana Unveils 5-Pillar Strategy to Transform the Mining Industry

 

Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources shared insight into how the strategy will transform the mineral sector at Mining in Motion 2025

ACCRA, Ghana, June 3, 2025/ -- Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, outlined a five-pillar strategy for the country’s mining industry at the Mining in Motion 2025 summit. The strategy is aimed at reforming the sector while empowering artisanal and small-scale mining (ASGM) initiatives. In a presentation during the opening of the summit, Minister Buah underscored how the strategy is designed to address illegal mining, which has significantly impacted the environment. Illegal mining occupies over 16% of the nation's forests, degrading more than 5,500 hectares. As such, the strategy seeks to address this issue by enhancing ASGM developments. ASGM operations have grown to account for 52.1% of Ghana’s total gold exports in 2025, and the strategy aims to further optimize the industry’s expansion. “Of the $4 billion in goods shipped from Ghana in Q1, 2025, 52.1% is from artisanal and small-scale miners - hence the need to ensure that mining is done in a sustainable manner,” stated Minister Buah. The first pillar of the strategy focuses on reforming the licensing regime. According to Minister Buah, the Ministry is currently overhauling the existing Minerals and Mining Act to attract new investments and bring in fresh ASGM players. This includes reviewing and restructuring licenses to ensure they align with Ghana’s national development agenda. “The strategy came into implementation four months ago and we want to ensure we do mining right,” stated Minister Buah. The second pillar centers on enhancing law enforcement. The Ministry is collaborating with various government agencies to intensify the arrest and prosecution of those engaged in illegal mining. This includes the creation of an independent Anti-Illegal Mining Military Task Force and the reorganization of security operations at both district and community levels. Environmental restoration is also a key priority. Under the third pillar, the Ministry has reclaimed eight out of nine forest reserves previously designated as red zones for illegal mining within just four months. Reforestation programs are now underway to restore these degraded areas and ensure long-term environmental sustainability. The fourth pillar emphasizes stakeholder engagement and public education. The Ministry is working closely with traditional authorities, lawmakers, civil society organizations and the general public to promote sustainable practices and encourage collective responsibility in preserving Ghana’s natural resources. “Lack of jobs and skills has been the main cause of illegal mining and we are dealing with this directly by diversifying employment. We want to create over 150,000 new jobs,” stated Minister Buah. The fifth pillar aims to provide alternative livelihoods and job opportunities, especially for youth and individuals previously involved in illegal mining. Through programs such as the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Program for Illegal Miners; the 1 Million Coders Program; and initiatives by the Youth Employment Agency, the government is offering skills training and employment placement. These efforts are designed to reduce reliance on illegal mining and diversify economic opportunities across the country. The pillars will be achieved through various strategies such as the Ghana Gold Board, the Minerals Development Fund, the Minerals Income Investment Fund, Geofencing of Excavators, the Investment in Geological Investigations of Mineralized Areas, Small-Scale Mining Cooperatives, the Blue Water Initiative, the Tree for Life Initiative and the Anti-Illegal Mining Secretariat. Eaton and Siemens Energy join forces to provide power and technology to accelerate the delivery of new data center capacity

Integrated modular data center construction will bring capacity online at speed to meet growing global demand for AI and cloud computing


Standardized on-site power generation is key to accelerate the development of new data centers




DUBLIN and BERLIN – Intelligent power management company Eaton, and Siemens Energy, one of the world’s leading energy technology companies, have announced a fast-track approach to building data centers with integrated onsite power. They will address urgent market needs by offering reliable grid-independent energy supplies and standardized modular systems to facilitate swift data center construction and deployment.




The collaboration will enable simultaneous construction of data centers and associated on-site power generation with grid connection and the integration of renewables to meet regional regulatory requirements, if required. This will provide data center owners and developers with choices they don’t have at present to enable them to build and run new data centers.



Siemens Energy’s modular and scalable power plant concept is tailored to the specific needs of data center operators. The standard configuration generates 500 megawatts (MW) of electricity, featuring highly efficient SGT-800 gas turbines, redundancy and additional battery storage systems, ensuring the highest reliability. Based on its modular approach, the size of the plant can be scaled up and down. In the future, it can also operate in a carbon-neutral manner, provided hydrogen is available and part of the data center’s sustainability strategy. The Siemens Energy concept also includes an optional emission-free clean air grid connection to be installed either during construction or as a retrofit. This feature would enable data centers to provide grid services.




Eaton will provide customers with electrical equipment such as medium- and low-voltage switchgear, UPS, busways, structural support, racks and containment systems, engineering services and the software offerings needed to protect and enable IT loads from the medium-voltage grid to the chip and help accelerate building and commissioning data centers with skidded and modular designs.




Cyrille Brisson, global segment leader, Data Centers, Eaton, said: “Our approach of letting customers pick the right balance of energy sources is very flexible and construction to start-up time is swift with options to reduce emissions in both the short and long term. Crucially, our approach offers data center owners and developers the opportunity to build capacity and bring it online fast in any location where they have land available that is close to gas, water and fiber.”

Andreas Pistauer, global head of sales, Siemens Energy’s Gas Services Business Area, said: “We offer hyperscalers, co-locators and investors a unique package, enabling them to reduce the time-to-market by up to two years in many places which leads to significant revenue gains. Our power plant design is built with redundancy, eliminating the need for backup diesel generators, and reducing CO2 emissions by about 50 percent.”

دبلن وبرلين – أعلنت شركة "إيتون"، المتخصصة في إدارة الطاقة الذكية، وشركة "سيمنز إينرجي"، إحدى الشركات الرائدة عالميًا في تقنيات الطاقة، عن نهج سريع الوتيرة لإنشاء مراكز بيانات مزودة بطاقة مدمجة في الموقع، حيث يهدف هذا التعاون إلى تلبية احتياجات السوق الملحة من خلال تقديم مصادر طاقة موثوقة ومستقلة عن الشبكة، وتوفير أنظمة معيارية موحدة لتسهيل بناء مراكز البيانات ونشرها في وقت قصير.

وستعمل هذه الشراكة على تمكين البناء الفوري لمراكز البيانات ومحطات توليد الطاقة المرتبطة بها في الموقع مع توفّر إمكانية الربط بالشبكة الكهربائية، ودمج مصادر الطاقة المتجددة للوفاء بالمتطلبات التنظيمية واللوائح الإقليمية، إذا لزم الأمر. كما سيوفر هذا التعاون لأصحاب مراكز البيانات ومطوريها خيارات جديدة لم تكن متاحة أمامهم من قبل؛ ما سيمكنهم من بناء مراكز بيانات جديدة وتشغيلها.

وقد صممت شركة "سيمنز إينرجي" مفهوم محطة توليد الطاقة المعياري والقابل للتطوير خصيصًا لتلبية الاحتياجات المحددة لمشغلي مراكز البيانات. وتُنتج التكوينات القياسية 500 ميجاوات من الكهرباء باستخدام توربينات الغاز SGT-800 عالية الكفاءة، مع وجود أنظمة احتياطية وأنظمة تخزين إضافية للبطاريات؛ ما يضمن أعلى مستويات الكفاءة والموثوقية. يمكن توسيع حجم المحطة أو تقليصه بناءً على هذا النهج المعياري. كما يمكن للمحطات، في المستقبل، العمل بطريقة محايدة للكربون في حال توفر الهيدروجين وكونه جزءًا من استراتيجية استدامة مركز البيانات. يتضمن المفهوم الذي صممته شركة "سيمنز إينرجي" أيضًا خيارًا اختياريًا للربط بالشبكة الهوائية النظيفة والخالية من الانبعاثات، والتي يمكن تركيبها إما أثناء الإنشاء أو خلال التحديث فيما بعد. ستمكّن هذه الميزة مراكز البيانات من تقديم خدمات للشبكة.

أُعيد انتخاب البروفيسور أحمد بولات رئيس مجلس الإدارة واللجنة التنفيذية للخطوط الجوية التركية، لعضوية مجلس إدارة الاتحاد الدولي للنقل الجوي (اياتا) لولاية ثانية، خلال الاجتماع السنوي العام الحادي والثمانين للاتحاد (AGM) الذي عُقد في نيودلهي. وخلال فترة ولايته الممتدة لثلاث سنوات، سيواصل البروفيسور بولات المساهمة في تحقيق تطوير رؤية الطيران العالمية، وتمثيل الصناعة إلى جانب كبار المسؤولين التنفيذيين في قطاع الطيران.

ويُعدّ الاتحاد الدولي للنقل الجوي (اياتا) من أكثر المنظمات الدولية تأثيرًا في تشكيل قطاع النقل الجوي العالمي. ويلعب دورًا محوريًا في الدفاع عن المصالح الاستراتيجية لشركات الطيران الأعضاء فيه، وتوجيه القطاع في قضايا رئيسية مثل الاستدامة والكفاءة التشغيلية والتحول الرقمي. وتُعدّ المشاركات التي يقوم بها مجلس إدارة الاتحاد الدولي للنقل الجوي، ركيزةً أساسيةً في دفع عجلة التقدم في قطاع الطيران العالمي.

ماجد الفطيم تعلن عن إطلاق مشتل أشجار مخصص وتعين مقاول رئيسي للمرحلتين الأولى والثانية ضمن مشروع غاف وودز‎

 

أعلنت "ماجد الفطيم"، الشركة الرائدة في تطوير مراكز التسوق، والوجهات المتكاملة، ومنشآت التجزئة والترفيه في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا وآسيا الوسطى، عن إنجازين هامين في مشروعها "غاف وودز" الذي يجسد مفهوم الحياة في الغابة، يتمثلان في إنشاء مشتل أشجار مخصص لدعم مفهوم التصميم الحيوي للمشروع، وتعيين شركة "إنوفو بيلد" كمقاول رئيسي لتنفيذ المرحلتين الأولى والثانية من المشروع.

ومع تحوّل مشروع غاف وودز إلى نموذجٍ ملهم لأسلوب معيشة مستدام في قلب الغابة في دبي، سيُشكّل المشتل محوراً رئيسياً لهذه الرؤية، حيث سيتم زراعة ورعاية آلاف أنواع الأشجار المحلية المقاومة لتغير المناخ على مدار الثمانية عشر شهراً القادمة. ويضم المشتل اليوم أكثر من 10,000 شجرة، ومن المتوقع أن يرتفع هذا الرقم إلى 20,000 شجرة و105,000 شجيرة بحلول مايو 2026. وسينمو المشتل في نهاية المطاف ليضم ما يصل إلى 30,000 شجرة، سيتم نقلها وإعادة زراعتها في جميع أنحاء مشروع غاف وودز.

وفي إطار هذه الخطوة الهامة في مسيرة المشروع الرائد، منحت ماجد الفطيم عقد إنشاء مشتل بقيمة 49 مليون درهم إماراتي لشركة براري للموارد الطبيعية، التابعة لشركة موارد القابضة للاستثمار، لتتولى إدارة ورعاية الأشجار وزراعتها طوال مراحل المشروع. وسيحتضن المشتل مجموعة متنوعة من الأشجار والنباتات المناسبة لمناخ المنطقة، مثل أشجار الأكاسيا، والحمضيات، والتين، والميليا أو الزنزلخت، والنخيل، والفرفار، والسدر، والغاف. وتم جلب جميع هذه الأنواع من منطقة دلتا النيل بمصر، والهند، وتايلاند، والإمارات العربية المتحدة، بما في ذلك الفجيرة، والشارقة، ورأس الخيمة، وأبوظبي.

يُعيد مشروع "غاف وودز" تعريف مفهوم العيش بتناغم مع الطبيعة، ويُعدّ هذا الإنجاز دليلاً على التفرّد الذي يتميز به وما يقدّمه من قيمة استثنائية. ومن المتوقع أن يفوق عدد الأشجار في هذا المشروع عدد قاطنيه، وأن يُشكل رئة خضراء حيوية، حيث يُوفر هواءً أنظف بنسبة تصل إلى 20%، ويساهم بخفض درجات الحرارة بمقدار 5 درجات مئوية مقارنة بها في المدينة. كما ستلعب هذه الأشجار دوراً محورياً في الحد من تآكل التربة، والحفاظ على المياه، وستشكل ممرات مظللة وخضراء في جميع أنحاء المجمع.

وفي معرض تعليقه على هذه التطورات، قال أحمد الشامي، الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة ماجد الفطيم العقارية: "لقد استغرق تطوير مفهوم "غاف وودز" سنوات عدة، حيث انطلقت فكرته برؤية تتمحور حول أسلوب الحياة المستدام. ومنذ الكشف عنه قبل عام، شهدنا طلباً متزايداً على المجمعات السكنية التي توفر لقاطنيها ارتباطاً وتواصلاً أقوى مع الطبيعة والبيئة. ويُعدّ استثمارنا في مشتل أشجار مُصمم خصيصاً لخدمة هذا المشروع، وشراكتنا مع شركة براري للموارد الطبيعية وموارد القابضة للاستثمار، خطوةً حيويةً تساهم في تحقيق رؤيتها. كما أننا سعداء جداً بالعمل مع شركة إينوفو بيلد لتنفيذ وتسليم أحياء سيليا وسيرا ولاسينا. ومن خلال علاقات التعاون والشراكة هذه، فإننا نُرسي معياراً جديداً لكيفية التعايش الهادف بين الطبيعة وأسلوب الحياة الراقي والمعيشة الفاخرة."

ومنحت ماجد الفطيم شركة إينوفو بيلد عقداً بقيمة 1.7 مليار درهم إماراتي لتنفيذ المرحلتين الأولى والثانية  في غاف وودز، يشمل بناء وإكمال 13 مبنى بمنصة مشتركة. وتشتهر إينوفو بيلد بخبرتها الكبيرة في تنفيذ مشاريع تطوير مستدامة عالية الجودة، وتشمل محفظة مشاريعها مساكن فاخرة، ومجمعات فلل، ومؤسسات تعليمية، ومشاريع بنية تحتية حيوية.

وسوف تركز إينوفو بيلد التي تولي اهتماماً بالغاً بالاستدامة في جميع عملياتها، على مفهوم المعيشة في الغابات الخاص بمشروع غاف وودز، حيث ستقوم بمزج الهندسة المعمارية المعاصرة والبيئة الطبيعية الغامرة لخلق معيار جديد للحياة الحضرية في دبي.

ويغطي مشروع غاف وودز مساحة 738 ألف متر مربع قبالة طريق الشيخ محمد بن زايد السريع، بالقرب من القرية العالمية، وسيضم أكثر من 7000 وحدة سكنية فاخرة، بما في ذلك وحدات تتألف من غرفة نوم واحدة وغرفتين وثلاث غرف نوم، بالإضافة إلى شقق بنتهاوس.

وسيوفر المشروع الذي يعطي أولوية لصحة وعافية سكانه، مسارات مشي يبلغ طولها 8 كيلومترات، وحلقة ركوب دراجات بطول 3.5 كيلومتر، ومسابح مصممة على طراز المنتجع، ومرافق لياقة بدنية، وحدائق للعائلات، وركن خاص لممارسة تمارين اليوغا. كما سيحتضن المجتمع أيضاً مركز Distrikt متعدد الاستخدامات من ماجد الفطيم، إلى جانب مجموعة مختارة من متاجر التجزئة والمطاعم التي تقدم وجبات يتم إعدادها من مكونات عضوية تأتي من المزرعة مباشرة إلى المائدة.

The OECD has cut global growth forecasts sharply following President Donald Trump’s new tariffs, prompting an immediate warning from Nigel Green, CEO of global financial advisory deVere Group, that investors must take action to reflect the new economic environment.

In its full economic outlook released Tuesday, the OECD projects global growth of just 2.9% in both 2025 and 2026—its lowest forecast since the 2020 pandemic shock. 

Nearly every G20 economy sees a downgrade. 

The OECD states: “Weakened economic prospects will be felt around the world, with almost no exception.”

“This downgrade highlights a fundamental shift in conditions,” says Nigel Green. 

“Investors have been relying on assumptions that no longer match reality. Growth is slowing, trade costs are rising, and central banks are more constrained than many had hoped. Allocations need to reflect that immediately.”

The OECD singles out the US, where growth is expected to fall from 2.8% in 2024 to 1.6% in 2025 and 1.5% in 2026. 

It attributes much of the slowdown to tariffs announced by Trump in April. The average US effective tariff rate now exceeds 15%, up from 2.5%, making it the highest since the 1940s.

“These tariffs are directly affecting business decisions,” notes the deVere CEO. 

“Companies are halting investment, adjusting pricing, and shifting production. These are measurable actions, not projections. We already see it in trade data and corporate guidance.”

The OECD also notes that the inflationary impact of tariffs is significant. The rise in costs is expected to keep the Federal Reserve from cutting interest rates this year, despite weaker growth. Financial markets had priced in easing; those expectations are now being reconsidered.

“Investors who have been waiting for rate cuts are now facing a different backdrop,” says Nigel Green. 

“Policy support is limited, but cost pressures remain elevated. That narrows the range of outcomes and calls for far more precise portfolio positioning.”

Beyond the US, the OECD downgrades growth in China, India, France, Japan, South Africa, and the UK. 

It reports weaker trade volumes, softer investment flows, and reduced business confidence across advanced and emerging markets.

“This is a broad-based loss of momentum,” says the chief executive of deVere Group.

“The effects of the tariffs are moving through the global system. The shift is visible across regions and sectors, and portfolios must reflect that shift.”

deVere is advising clients to reduce exposure to assets dependent on global trade volumes and low borrowing costs. 

The firm is prioritizing allocations to infrastructure, inflation-linked assets, and sectors where revenues are more stable and less sensitive to cross-border disruption.

“We are focusing on resilience and consistency,” says Nigel Green. 

“That includes select real asset strategies, stronger regional balance sheets, and businesses with pricing power that is not tied to external demand.”

While the OECD calls for easing trade restrictions to restore investment, it also signals that no near-term resolution is likely. Tariffs now form a core part of US economic strategy, and market participants should not expect those policies to unwind quickly.

“This is not something investors can ignore,” says Nigel Green. 

“Unprecedented trade policies are shaping supply chains, global investment flows, and inflation expectations. This is not just a headline risk, it’s already embedded in the numbers.”

He adds: “The global growth model is adjusting. Relying on past patterns or assuming conditions will revert is not a reliable approach. 

“Investors who respond now have more room to manoeuvre than those who wait for confirmation in price movements.”

The OECD’s latest forecast points to a slower, more complex environment for capital allocation. For investors, that means reassessing exposures and acting before further repricing occurs.

Nigel Green concludes: “Delaying decisions increases the risk of being caught off-balance. Those who make adjustments now are more likely to protect value and find opportunities others miss.”

London entrepreneur lands Red Bull, BBC and Channel 4 in first year of business

Blue Door Productions is celebrating its first year in business, having already worked with several leading brands like Red Bull and Channel 4.

The company, run solely by 29-year-old Molly McDonald, is at the forefront of ‘YouTube-first’ production.

YouTube has now become a primary source of media consumption for people in the UK, with viewership statistics overtaking those of Netflix and Disney Plus.

Molly McDonald, CEO, said; “I’m very proud of what Blue Door has achieved in its first year of business.

“We’ve yet to see the full potential of YouTube as a platform, though there are certain rules and practices that one must adhere to in order to succeed.

“It’s knowing the platform like the back of my hand that’s lead to working with brands like Red Bull and creators with millions of followers like Zac Alsop.”

Molly graduated in 2017 from Boston University with a degree in journalism, then worked for Time Inc. before creating multi-platform content for TV, including Saturday Night Live and Law and Order.

In 2021 Molly moved to London from New York City where her passion for content creation and video production only grew.

Molly added; “It was at that time when I realised the potential in YouTube production; it was like the Wild West of media in that it didn’t adhere to the rules of more conventional platforms. That was very exciting to me.

“It hosted real storytellers who weren’t obstructed by red tape and bureaucracy, having instead to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

“The best thing about working in YouTube production is the engagement with your audience – you enter a discussion with people that are consuming your stories, which enables you to see the impact they’re having. That two-way dialogue is much rarer when working in TV.”

As well as names like Red Bull, BBC, Channel 4 and some of the fastest growing creators in social media, Molly has accumulated an impressive list of clients in the last 12 months.

Most recently, she filmed, edited and produced the story of Mitch Hutchcraft, a 31-year-old former Royal Marine who made history by completing the longest ever climb of Mount Everest, reaching the summit on 11^th May 2025.

Molly said; “My positive experience has been a direct reflection of the support I’ve received from others in the industry who have championed and spread the word about Blue Door and that's been very special.”

The number of active monthly YouTube users as of February 2025 was over 2.5 billion. By comparison, Netflix reported 301.6 million paid memberships as of January 2025.
