NYU Abu Dhabi Welcomes Nobel Laureate Thomas J. Sargent

The award-winning economist is teaching quantitative economics in the fall semester

Abu Dhabi, November 16, 2018 - The Nobel prize-winning American economist, Thomas J. Sargent, is teaching a course on quantitative economics this fall at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD).

Topics in International and Macroeconomics aims to teach students at NYUAD how to use the power of computing to analyze national economies by developing an understanding of international financial landscapes and discerning valuable monetary information. Sargent’s presence, both in and out of the classroom, is providing students with a unique opportunity to learn from a leading economist who was the previous president of the Econometric Society, the American Economic Association and the Society for Economic Dynamics; as well as an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science.

Sargent said: “I have heard many good things about the intelligence and work ethic of the students at NYUAD from my friends who have taught in economics and other departments. I am also looking forward to interacting with the faculty in the economics and other departments, some of whom I already know and respect greatly. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity and privilege to work at NYUAD.”

Commenting on his experience thus far, Sargent remarked, "I am very impressed by the students because of their intelligence, training, and curiosity, in class we have mostly been using a `reverse Socratic method’. Students pose sharp questions to me. This wonderful process has shaped my lectures so far. The Socratic method works only with top students, and so this `reverse Socratic method’ indicates extraordinary students.''

Sargent was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics in 2011 for his work on cause and effect in the sphere of macro-economics, a subject which he has worked on for nearly 50 years.

Sargent is the W.R. Berkley Professor of Economics and Business and joined New York University in 2002. He was awarded the Nemmers Prize in Economics alongside the Nobel Prize and his textbooks are considered required reading for modern economic graduates.



NYUAD Dean of Social Science Hervé Crès said, “Tom Sargent's course emphasizes the future-oriented interdisciplinarity of economics at NYUAD, there is an important component of computer programming to complement the thorough economic analysis. 3 Steps Towards Cybersecurity in a Digital World

“Security is everyone’s job now.”

These are wise words from Amazon’s CTO Dr. Werner Vogels, especially for companies embarking on a digital transformation or accelerating their journey.



Why should we all consider this advice? A recent report released by McKinsey[i]shows impressive figures: More than 100 billion lines of code are created annually, and hackers produce some 120 million new variants of malware every year. A strong Cybersecurity strategy is essential. Gartner research predicts that “By 2020, 60% of digital businesses will have suffered a major service failure.”[ii]



Cybersecurity is a business issue

Is it any wonder, then, that Cybersecurity issues keep all of us up at night? The fundamental issue is not about developing new Cybersecurity capabilities as part of business strategy. Instead, it’s about integrating them seamlessly.

What do I mean by that? Here, we need a big shift in mindset: first, in thinking that adding a Cybersecurity layer will make software and products more complicated to use and, second, in regarding Cybersecurity only as an IT issue.

In that context, here are three approaches central to a Cybersecurity posture:




Digital user-experience: Cybersecurity cannot be an afterthought; it must be completely embedded in the user experience. Worsening the user experience or adding friction can prompt users to find a “work around” that can ultimately – and unintentionally – worsen the overall security posture.


Everyone’s problem: We must find a way to make Cybersecurity something that everyone at a digital company thinks about — even without overtly thinking about it. About two-thirds of malware linked to data breaches or other incidents last year came from malicious email attachments.[iii]It takes just one bad click to open the gates to the nefarious cyber underworld. So, Cybersecurity must become engrained in each of our daily actions. As a global company in over 100 countries, Schneider drills down to the individual level, providing ongoing learning and enablement about Cybersecurity.


A layered approach: For any company, a perimeter defense is not enough in today’s digital world. Everyone is connected constantly — from our homes, smartphones, and across the distributed enterprise network. A layered approach is essential as we cannot just rely on a moat — as wide as it is — in today’s hyper-connected world. For that perspective, the NIST framework[iv], is an incredibly useful reference as it defines different levels of defense (version 1.1 of the NIST framework was released on April 16th, 2018), from the identification of risks to the recovery from incidents (resilience).



The power and profit of IT/OT convergence

MICHELIN ANNOUNCES 2019 STARS FOR BANGKOK, PHUKET AND PHANG-NGA

DUBAI, 15 November 2018: Michelin  has announced the closely-watched Michelin Guide Bangkok, Phuket and Phang-Nga 2019 Selection.



The world-renowned guide, which is now in its second edition, recognises 27 dining establishments in Bangkok and Phuket – 23 of which are awarded with one star each and four that attain two stars each.



Modern European restaurant, Sühring made the leap from one to two stars in this years’ guide, joining three other two-Michelin-starred restaurants – Gaggan, Le Normandie and Mezzaluna on the list.



Ten restaurants in Bangkok and Phuket have made their debut in the one-star category of the 2019 edition. They include Canvas, Gaa, Le Du, Methavalai Sorndaeng, PRU, R-Haan, Ruean Panya, Saawaan, Sorn and Suan Thip.



Jay Fai, the popular Thai shop house restaurant that was made famous following the release of the 2018 Michelin Guide Bangkok, maintains its Michelin star and is once again the only street food on the list.



As with the first Michelin guide to Bangkok, there remain no three-star restaurants in the 2019 edition.

Evonik launches COPI™ at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference

Evonik, one of the world leaders in specialty chemicals, participates this week at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) held between 12 & 15 November at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC).



“This is the first participation for Evonik in ADIPEC, and we plan to use this platform to bring our latest technologies to the Middle East region,” said Dr. Can Turhan, Business Manager for Evonik Oil Additives in Africa, Middle East, Turkey & Bulgaria.



“At this event, we regionally launched COPI™ technology – or Crude Oil Paraffin Inhibitors - targeting companies involved in the extraction, transport and storage of crude oil with solutions for the presence of paraffin wax in oil,” Turhan added.



COPI™ from the Oil Additives team at Evonik provide benefits in crude oil recovery, flow assurance and storage. This technology modifies the formation and behaviour of wax crystals in the oil, dispersing them and preventing them from adhering to surfaces, such as those in pipelines. Therefore, the new solution allows for better flow while transporting crude oil.
